The World's Gonna Get Squished!!!!

Here's a report of one extra's life on the set of DEEP IMPACT, yup that's right the first big thing in space coming at earth film to hit our screens in 1998. The film has a very different mission and angle than ARMAGEDDON. I'm looking forward to it, but I have yet to see it's trailer, on the other side that new trailer from Armageddon is pretty damn rocking!!! This spy is known as Chester Kent. Go on... try to get that reference. Come on, bring it on. Chester Kent, you heard me... name the film. This the last trivia question of the year. Now Chester is a self professed Cinemaniac, and does give away some very very very spoilers below. I will warn you before I let you see it. So pay attention!! Here's the report:

I tried to remember as much as I could from my experience on the set of Deep Impact so now I will tell you all about it. First I will tell you about my scene with Tea Leoni. This scene takes place on the Key Bridge in DC and is at the beginning of the movie. It starts off with her character driving home from work when out of nowhere, government agents start to ram her car on the Key Bridge in order to get her to stop. Their motive for doing this is because Tea works for MSNBC and knows some information about the comet that will soon collide with earth. They eventually take her off the road and question her about what she knows. When they filmed the interegation I was too far away to hear the dialogue. In case you wanted to know, she was driving a light blue Saab and the agents were driving dark blue Crown Victorias or something that resembles them. Anyway, the other scene I was in was filmed about a week before the one with Tea. It takes place at the end of the movie and involves a massive traffic jam right outside of Virginia Beach. In reality it was filmed in Manassas, Virginia on an unopened bypass. The scene opens showing a huge traffic jam which includes over 2,100 cars! Everyone hears that the comet is headed towards Virginia Beach so they all try to leave town at the same time! On a four lane bypass, we created about 10 rows across of cars. There were cars down in the median and on hills. The production company went to local junk yards and got old wrecked cars and positioned them throughout the traffic to look like there were some accidents while trying to leave town. They also brought in 18-wheelers and jackknifed them amongst us as well. Anyway, the scene begins with an overall shot of all the cars. The camera then follows a motorcycle that is darting in and out of all the cars. On this bike is no other than Leo Peterman (Elijah Wood), he is looking for a maroon van that is holding his girlfriend (Leelee Sobieski) and her parents as well as her baby brother/sister. As he is working his way through the crowd, he spots the van and immediately darts over to it to find that it is not them. After that he starts back up on his bike. A few more minutes pass before he finds them. His girlfriend sees him ride by so she climbs on top of the van and starts yelling for him. He hears her and stops. He gets off the bike and runs over to her as they embrace. They start talking about how they have to get out of there because the comet is set to hit any minute now. Her parents get out of the car and join in on the conversation. The mother is played by some lady from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the father is played by Mimi Leder's husband. Leo encourages his girlfriend to come with him but she says she doesn't want to leave her parents behind to die. Her parents quickly disagree and tell her to go with him. They strap a baby harness onto her and place her baby sister/brother into it. Both of them get on the motorcycle but not before an emotional goodbye. As they take off on the bike, the comet appears out of the sky and begins to hurtle its way over our heads. We all stop our cars as it approaches and we all get out to see it pass by, very close to the ground. As we turn around, we see it crash down into the Atlantic Ocean! It quickly creates a 1,000 foot tidal wave that begins to chase after us. Some of us take off running as the water comes crashing down on top of us. Of course the wave was added during post-production by ILM. In the trailer I saw attached to Titanic, I saw some footage from that scene. There is a couple of shots showing all the cars, then there is one where Elijah and Leelee embrace.

At the end of the trailer they show the two of them standing there with blue sky behind them. They both have bumps and bruises on their faces which makes me believe that somehow they survived the impact. That kind of sucks because I got killed in the movie and they didn't!
