I am – Hercules!!
“Thank you, every marauder from ‘Escape From New York!’”
Patton Oswalt begins “My Weakness is Strong,”
his new and glorious hour of Comedy Central stand-up, kicking off one of the funniest hours of television you’ll see this year.
“Bring forth my doom spawn from your stink crevice and prove the gypsy wrong!” he booms by way of announcing the impending birth of his first child, never bothering to recount the circumstances that precipitated the curse, nor the curse’s nature.
A good chunk of the special’s first act explores Oswalt’s disdain for the notion of home birthing. In act two he impersonates a treadmill with confidence issues.
Act three references a fear of post-apocalyptic cannibals. In act four he discusses how child-journalists robbed him of his sarcasm while promoting “Ratatouille.” Act five allows fantasies of going back in time with 2009 technology to blow the mind of the Patton Oswalt of 1999, and offers also a conversation between the last racists of 2016 or thereabout. Act six puts into play sky cake and the flying sodomy demons.
The special concludes with Oswalt’s ripping anecdote about a hamper-toting comedy-magician and the meltdown that ensued when it was discovered he’d be paid $70 instead of $75 for one evening’s performance.
Set that TiVo! The special airs Sunday opposite “Mad Men” at 10 p.m. but gets repeated at half past midnight. If you miss those, you’ll be lucky to remember it airs one more time nine days later: Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
10 p.m. Sunday. Comedy Central.
