The Panting Menace fills us in on what Lucas said in the UK to EMPIRE about SWE2

Hey folks, Harry here with a report from The Panting Menace of what's in the latest EMPIRE magazine about Star Wars Episode 2. Well, I'm in the process of trying to get out of these Star Wars 'blahs' I'm in. Seems everytime someone brings it up, I feel a bit negative, and I don't like feeling negative about STAR WARS. I think I just need to not see any of the films for a while and become starved for it again. I believe I'm suffering from Burn Out on it. Is there a therapy group? How much are meetings?

Greetings Harry!

You probably know this already, but who knows? Empire probably isn't out yet in the USA...so this may make interesting reading.

In this month's edition of Britain's favourite movie magazine (ahem!) they carry an exclusive interview with none other than George Lucas!

So what did the Bequiffed One have to say for himself? Pretty interesting things, actually, regarding the fate of Darth Maul, and the next two Episodes...

On Darth Maul:

"At one point, when Obi-Wan kills Darth Maul, he just fell in the pit. I looked at it and thought this isn't going to work because, if people like him enough, they're going to want him to come back and they're going to assume somehow he gets out of it. So I had to cut him in half to say that this guy's gone, he's history...I'll come up with another apprentice. The whole issue of having apprentices, poor Sidious having to replenish his apprentice supply, is one of the main plot points."

On Episodes 2 and 3:

"the other one that gets asked a lot is why doesn't Qui-Gon disappear like everybody else. That's a plot point that centres around Obi-Wan saying to Vader/Anakin in the first one, "if you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine". There is an issue about the Force that will be revealed.

"The next one is a love story...and then the third film is very, very, very dark. It's not a happy movie by any stretch of the imagination. It's a tragedy...ultimately, the final story is between Yoda, Obi-Wan, Anakin and the Queen. It's really their story, those four characters."

On Jar Jar:

"There's a group of fans who don't like comic sidekicks...in the second film they hated Yoda, he was not a well-liked character...in the third film, they hated the Ewoks...they can't stand it that there is this aspect to these movies, but comic sidekick characters have been in every single movie"

So there you go, Harry. Probably nothing you didn't already know, and certainly not worthy of posting on your fine (if sometimes over-zealous) website, but interesting nonetheless to hear it from the man himself.

Keep up the good work!
