I haven't read this book, but the fact that Peter Cattaneo (of THE FULL MONTY) is involved as director, marking this his first American film... Well that's enough to gain my interest. But here's where and what the project is...

BUDDING PROSPECTS
STORY: Felix is the proto-typical slacker - late twenties, unable to finish ANYTHING including school, unable to hold a girlfriend and uninterested in anything. His ennui has become so overwhleming and all-consuming that his rich father has completely cut him off and would prefer to lock him up for observation. So imagine his surprise when his one last chance a redemption shows up - a proposal from an acquaintance, Vogelsang, to find two friends, spend the summer on his land in Marin County- and grow three million dollars worth of Pot (marijuana). Felix accepts the offer and this plan becomes THE plan, the one he has to see through to the end or die trying. Meanwhile everything, EVERYTHING that can go wrong, does. Nosy neighbors, insane police, DEA visitors, Caribou nibbling at the irrigation hose.... shit, Felix even falls in love, for real, with one of the locals. The hilarious premise escalates to an outragous, over the top conclusion.
STATUS: based on the famous book by T.C. Boyle, Peter Cattaneo (the FULL MONTY) directs his first American film. He's the PERFECT guy to do an intelligent, character based comedy. DV DeVincentis and Steve Pink wrote several drafts before heading off to HIGH FIDELITY with partner John Cusack. Bruce Robinson (WITHNAIL AND I) is currently in London working on the rewrite with Peter. A high priority for all involved.
Thanks, Harry.
