Is A Remake OK If The Guy Who Made The Original Film Is The Person Remaking It??

We all know there are far too many remakes in the pipeline these days - and most of us aren't particularly happy with "the system's" lack of originality when we know there are many original projects being turned down in the name of reviving safe, pre-established, easily marketable fare. But...does that equation change at all when a remake is actually being mounted by the person who made the original film? I guess that would depend on the project... Donald Wrye is remaking his own movie - ICE CASTLES (HERE). Wrye's 1978 original starred Lynn-Holly Johnson (who played, well, an ice skater in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY) & dealt with a figure skater whose life is turned upside down when she loses her sight...and how she continues to skate despite her damaged vision. The film's Marvin Hamlisch/Carol Bayer Sager/Melissa Manchester theme song nabbed an Oscar nomination & subsequently became a muzak favorite...

Based on past Talkbacks, Donaly Wrye's name may be recognized by many Geeks as the writer/director of the controversial ABC miniseries AMERIKA - which chronicled life in the United States ten years after a Soviet takeover. I'd rather see that revisited, but I guess we can't have everything...
