Goldbug's look at THE SIXTH SENSE

Hey folks, Harry here. I'll be seeing this one Thursday night and I really look forward to it, since I'm having such a fun year so far with the supernatural films I've seen thus far. Goldbug really seemed to like the Michigan screening he took in. So, until tomorrow night, here's Goldbug...

Autobot espionage director Goldbug reporting in on one of the more interesting films ive seen in recent days, SIXTH SENSE

So anyways, i'm sitting at Autobot headquarters when Teletran 1 Alerts me to a screening of a new movie at the local Cineplex. The information i'm given is its name- SIXTH SENSE.

Transforming into my VW mode i quickly make my way to the theatre. On the way in i pass a poster for the film... i look at the credits.

Bruce Willis? and a kid? Didnt i see this film? at the dollar show? and wasnt it called mercury rising? and wasnt it sorta crummy.

And then i access my data banks- i remember a trailer for this... Yes the Edgy spookyass Hollywood Pictures film!

So after a trip to the snack bar to get some energon goodies i approach the door... it appears you need a pass to get in. I had no pass. So I used my espionage skills to convince the elderly fleshling he had already taken my pass.

Was it worth all the trouble?

yes.

We seem to have entered a new trend in horror films... that being horror with a heart. Last years WHAT DREAMS MAY come was perhaps the first film to start this trend. While yes, there are scary and disturbing bits in these films, they are played down, made more poignant by the fact that you actually care about the characters by films end.

Earlier this summer there was this film called PHANTOM MENACE. People criticized an actor, Jake LLoyd for being 'wooden'. I personally thought Lloyd did an adequate job in Phantom Menace, but in relation to the actor who plays young Cole Sear (Haley Joel osment) Lil' Darth is a pinocchio.

Osment is absolutely incredible in this film. He definitely is an actor to watch. Osment's character has powers beyond that of mortal ken-- he can see the dead-- and interact with them. The script requires Osment to go from little kid to Hannibal Lecter to little kid in a minute.

Bruce Willis turns in another decent performance as child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a man so dedicated to the disturbed kids in his care that he 'puts everything else second' including his hottie of a wife. Willis... i dont know what to think of him sometimes... Die Hard 3 one day, 12 Monkeys the next. Consistency would be nice. This was a Monkey day for Bruce.

Director M. Night Shyamalan really should get a pat on the back. this film, Like Mathisons' DREAMS last year is only effective when you can believe in the people, and when you as a viewer can build an emotional attachment to those characters. Sear, his mother, Crowe...all of these were very well thought out characters. Shyamalan also has a good grasp on timing, essential to a film of this genre. The lady sitting next to me jumped out of her seat at least twice.

I was surprised by the films ending. This was a pretty twisted film to begin with, but when i think of the ending, it was really well done, and it makes total sense to this viewer.

Highly recommended.

this is Goldbug, rolling out.
