Composer Craig Safan Discusses THE LAST STARFIGHTER Remake/Sequel/Whatever It Is...

Merrick here...
Composer Craig Safan was recently interviewed about his involvement with various scores (like CHEERS) and discusses his tremendous work on THE LAST STARFIGHTER. During the interview, Safan reveals that work is underway on 25 Anniversary DVD release of the film (which would be this year), and that anniversary theatrical screenings will also occur (in places like the Aero theater in L.A.) He also refrences the remake (or sequel?) we got wind of a while back. Very close paraphrase (the audio interview isn't rewindable):
There are plans for a sequel. There has been a script written, it's been storyboarded. I think they're just sort of waiting for the final go.
...says Safan in an interview you can find HERE. There's some surprisingly candid discussion in the interview about the current state of film scoring (essentially saying that a majority of today's film music sounds too much alike), Hollywood's propensity for pushing out the old guard in favor of new talent, etc. Give it a listen it you have a chance...it's approx 30 mins long. There's been some confusion about whether the new STARFIGHTER project is a remake, a pseudo-sequel, or what. I can't say for certain, but all indication's I've received point to it being a sequel of sorts. Eager to learn more...
