Folks Harry here and I tell ya... If the rumors on this one are true (and over at ROTTEN TOMATOES has a pair of praising reviews) then we may very well be on our way to a fantastic year of comedies and horror films. Keep your fingers crossed. And for now... here's Mr Gravity...
I'm a projectionist at a brand new local theatre (have been a proj. for about 4 years now), and look forward to those nights where I hear of a "press-screening." I'm a horror aficionado, so when I heard that there was going to be one of "The Sixth Sense" I said to myself: "Oh, why the hell not..." I mean, its Bruce Willis... so it can't be a big deal... and it looks like its got a lot of good scares...
Scares... no... emotional-rip-your-heart-out-passionate-acting... yes.
My God... this movie got inside my head! That little boy (I believe he was in "Bogus" a few years back) deserves an Oscar. Amazingly enough, Bruce Willis was also very good in his role. His connection with the boy is amazing. The movie does not deliver scares as the trailer made most people think... at least not in the manner that they expected.
Therefore, I take back my previous statement. This movie delivers "scares" on a different emotional impact. They're delivered on a more MENTAL rather than physical level. This is a good thing! Like "Blair Witch", and "Stir of Echoes" the creepy feeling you get whenever the sound dies out, or whenever you see a glimpse of one of the boy's "visions" is not overwhelming, but just enough to make the audience uncomfortable.
The connection between the boy and his mother was also overwhelmingly emotional. Especially in their last scene together. It was very well done overall. I have not seen a movie that goes for this kind of impact in awhile (at least not from a major film company). I'm not much for those sappy kind of films, but I'll not put myself above them to avoid saying "See this ASAP."
Word of warning: I hate to even give a semi-spoiler to someone like you... but I'll tell you this... the ending came out of nowhere... was entirely unexpected... and was ingenious... call me ignorant, or whatever... but I honestly didn't see it coming. I haven't seen such a dark, foreboding film end on such a high and uplifting note since "Dark City." Man... that was great... I definitely will own this one, if only for the pure self-satisfaction and well-crafted script and directing work that this film offered. Quality entertainment for almost anyone that can handle the emotional impact!
Let me know if and when you've had a chance to see it! (I know you probably get thousands of emails a day, but I'd really love to know your take on my opinions of this film).
Oh... my theatre's getting a copy of BWP on the 30th of this month... I called our film buyer enough to convince him it would do excellent in our area... WHOOPEE! I myself have already seen it, but I can't wait for everyone else to also... ;)
Hoping to hear from you soon,
mr.gravity
