Harry here with clarified information about this alleged NAPOLEON film of Spielberg's. Turns out it has NOTHING to do with Napoleon other than the name in the title. It is being developed as a vehicle for Tom Cruise and to be directed by Spielberg. But here's our latest spy, Carnival of Souls to tell you all about it!
Harry, I hate to be a spoilsport, but here's the deal on Napoleon. Doug
Wright was working on a script called The Napoleon of Crime. It was about a
famous Victorian-era thief---the model for Moriarty in the Sherlock Holmes
series, evidently---who falls in love with a painting that he has stolen.
The story was based on a biography of the thief, also called the Napoleon of
Crime and published last year, and was at one point a vehicle for Tom
Cruise, to be directed by Spielberg for Dreamworks. As far as I know, the
script is still in development, but Doug Wright is no longer involved. He
has moved on to the screenplay for his truly brilliant play, Quills, which
is going before the cameras in London in August with Geoffrey Rush as the
Marquis De Sade, Joaquin Phoenix and Kate Winslet. Phil Kaufman is directing.
Just
call me the Carnival of Souls.
Word has reached me by a Time Bandit that Spielberg has been working on a NAPOLEAN project on the sly. He has apparently hired the award winning playwright of QUILLS, Doug Wright to write it. Now the interesting part is as the story goes, Doug has been working on this for about a year now, and he and Dreamworks, along with Paramount, are working to get his play QUILLS produced as a feature film.
Alright... Now you folks remember how back when Kubrick passed away there were all those rumors about a project that Kubrick and Spielberg were working on together for Steven to direct. If my memory serves, the story went that there had been over 300 pages of notes faxed to Spielberg about this mysterious project that most folks just assumed was A.I.
Well, Kubrick had wanted to make a NAPOLEAN movie for a long LONG time. At one point, I believe, Jack Nicholson had been attached (this was long ago) to play the lead. Now, for the past year a NAPOLEAN script has been being developed and written by this Wright fella. Could it be that the project Kubrick was consulting Spielberg on was in actuallity NAPOLEAN?
I'm not saying it was... I'm merely hypothesizing that it might very well could have been. (Now if that isn't a weasally non-committal statement I don't know what is) We know that Stanley wanted to direct A.I. next... I'll put this bit out there... Let's see what the 'traditional press' can find out. I'm curious to see if this was the Kubrick/Spielberg connection. Hmmmmmm...
