The Juice's Review of EYES WIDE SHUT

Alright folks, here's our first review of EYES WIDE SHUT written by... one of us, the anonymous masses, for Kubrick's last film. First off, The Juice has one spoiler, the opening image, and that's it. So if you don't even want to know the opening image.... Don't read the following. He likes the film, but doesn't feel it is the second coming of God on Earth. He was also, it seems, a bit weirded out by the end... Hmmmm... that'd be a first for Kubrick, eh? Well, here's The Juice...

If your gonna go out, why not go out with a bang. Or such Stanley Kubrick would say if he knew of his untimely death at the completion of Eyes Wide Shut, a movie i had the pleasure of seeing this wednsday night (A call from the heavens saved me from seeing South Park for the third time, not that thats a bad thing). Now to be honest i am a Kubrick fan but i am far from a Kubrick fanatic, I havent seen all of his movies although that Kubrick DVD collection is very tempting (if not for the $150 price tag which is a tad bit hefty for an 18 year old), anyhow on to the movie.

The movie starts of with an eyes wide open shot of Nicole's ass, which is almost worth the price of admission alone. But thats about all the spoilers im gonna give out. I went into this movie knowing absolutley jack crap, and in some ways i left knowing even less. The acting is top notch, Cruise is cool and confident, while Nicole (in more of a supporting role) is sexual and charming, the couple definately made the movie worth while. The scenery is simple yet powerful, and Kubrick's camara work is nothing short of fantastic. By keeping the character's surrounding basic, what Kubrick intends to stick out does with a vengence. But unfortunately the movie does not reach perfection, it tends to drag in more than a few parts, with even boring stretches a few times, but what bothered me in particular the most was the pay off in the end. It is slightly unclimatic but it gets the point across. This appears to be a movie that will bring out different oppinions in people, some wont like it, some will. Or in laymens terms people not used to Kubrick's intentional wierdness will not get it, and those who are fans of Kubrick will drool over it.

In the end it is a rewarding experience that could have been better, but a suitable end to a legend's career.

Till the next time, im out, The Juice...
