Hey there folks... Harry here in Minneapolis and ya know... There is something fishy about this review. My Spidey sense is telling me it might very well be a plant. There was an unnatural consistency to the hairs being raised on the back of my neck while I read it... But then, that could just be my liberal belief in Republican Dirty Tricks and my natural suspicion of all things Nixon-y. So... see if you feel a load of BS about this review... and if not... hell accept it. I do know this. At least so far, this has been a very very unusually strong season for comedies... and maybe... just maybe this DICK ain't flacid...
Hola Harry, "The Dudette" here with a little review of a movie opening in August called DICK. Now I know you're busy and all but this is a movie I really think you should check out. It's the story of Watergate if it happened in some sort of freaky alternate universe.
here's a barebones breakdown of the story: Betsy Jobs(Kirsten Dunst) and Arlene Lorenzo(Dawson's Creeks Michelle Williams) are in the Watergate hotel, where Arlene lives, the night of that infamous break-in, they are discovered and this information is brought to the attention of the President(played wonderfully by Clueless's Dan Hedaya) President Nixon soon makes friends with these two teenaged girls making them even the Presidental "dog walkers". Both girls develop crushes on the President and although both girls are ditzy blondes (think of it as romy and Michelle's high School reunion if they were teens in the 70's living in Washingtion and discovered the break-in which I'm sure is probably how it was pitched) they soon discover what happened at Watergate and what Nixon is doing to cover-up the scandel and they become "Deep Throat" to Woodward(SNL's Will Ferral, much better here then he was with Chris Kattan in Night at the Rockbury) and Bernstien(Bruce McCulloch, of Kids in the Hall and SNL) this movie also features Newsradio and Kids in the Hall vet Dave Foley as one of the President's advisors, and Harry Shearer as G Gordon Liddy.
After watching this movie I went home and put in my copies of Redford's "All The President's Men" and Stone's "Nixon" This movie shouldn't be compared to those two movies as they took a "real life" look at Nixon and Watergate, this is more of what-if comedy with elements of social satire and romantic comedy even. "DICK" was written and directed by Andrew Fleming, whose previous credits indclude, and I would have never guessed it coming out of this movie, Threesome and The Craft, but in retrospect I can see it, with it's dark comedy/misfits in love/ones actions led to their consequences POV that his movies have. It really is a gem and could probably get overlooked in the shuffle and bustle of late summer unless Sony Pictures does some major marketing. It's is being distrubed though Sony and Trimark and is produced by Pheonix pictures which has produced some wonderful films including Apt Pupil, The People vs. Larry Flynnt, U-Turn, and one of my personal Favs of 98 The Thin Red Line.
Dick is the name of the movie it's released in Augest, Check it out
till then "The Dudette" is going to go listen to some Creedance,
