I am – Hercules!!
John Dahl is one of the greatest creators of low-grossing movies alive (rent “Red Rock West” at once if you don’t know what I’m talking about) and tonight he turns his attention to Showtime’s favorite scheming psychopath.
Chicago’s “Capone” returns his gaze to Miami:
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago with a few choice tidbits about Episode 303 of "Dexter." There have been bloodier season than Season 3, there have been weirder ones too. But I don't think anything compares in terms of unpredictability than this season. I've seen the first four episodes of this remarkable Showtime show, and I cannot for the life of me figure out where the hell this badboy is going, thanks in large part to the outstanding work Jimmy Smits is putting into his role as District Attorney Miguel Prado, who becomes more complex and less flawless with each passing week.
What's the title of "Dexter" 303?
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
Who directed?
John Dahl, one of the great directors working today of the modern crime drama. I have admired his works immensely for the last 20 years. His films include KILL ME AGAIN, RED ROCK WEST, THE LAST SEDUCTION, ROUNDERS, and last year's exception Ben Kingsley vehicle YOU KILL ME. I even interviewed him about that film. As for TV, just in the last couple of years, he's directed episodes of "Life," "Fear Itself," True Blood," "Californication," and one of the upcoming final episodes of "Battlestar Galactica."
Who wrote it?
Show co-executive producer Scott Buck, who has written three previous "Dexter" episodes, as well as scripts for "Six Feet Under" (on which he was also a co-executive producer) and "Rome." He also wrote the screenplay for the direct-to-video classic TREMORS 4.
Where do we pick things up?
Dexter and Rita are shopping for groceries with her kids. Dexter sees a man talking to the daughter, Astor. Dex's "prey-dar" goes on alert. He breaks up the discussion, and the man says he's was just asking Astor where the Cheerios are. He is forever known as Cheerios Man.
As for the Freebo/Jane Doe case, Freebo still has not been found and Jane Doe still has not been identified. Apparently, Miguel Prado (Smits) has decided to keep his secret about Dexter's action a secret. Dex refers to him ominously as "the only living person who has seen me with blood on my hands" and wonders why Prado is trying so hard to be his friend by actually trying to convince Lt. Laguerta to scale back he investigation into his brother's death.
Is the Rat Squad's Yuki Amado still after Deb to get close to former narcotics officer Quinn?
She is nowhere to be fond this week, although Deb is looking at Quinn with more suspicion these days.
How does Dexter take to the thought of being a dad?
This week, his insecurities about being a father come forward when Rita asks the orphan Dexter about his family's medical history. Since he doesn't know it, he agrees to get a complete work up from a doctor, which begins with a brain scan. This triggers a scary memory about his father comparing the brain scan of a serial killer with Dexter's own scan.
Dexter also finally tells his sister Deb the good news. She joyfully refers to the baby as a "motherfucking, rolly polly, chubby cheeked shit machine." She actually very happy for him.
Any new cases for the detectives to fret over?
Oh yes. Another dead body shows up with a patch of skin missing...a really big patch of skin. The detectives all assume this is more of Freebo's handiwork, since the body is that of a certain pimp from last week. Dexter and Prado know better but can't say anything.
Do Dexter and Prado get to hang a little bit more in this episode?
Indeed. As with last week, their increasingly frequent interactions are the show's highlights. In one afternoon meeting, Prado assures Dexter that he didn't do anything wrong, but he's clearly looking for signs in Dexter that he is bothered by what he's done; Dexter obliges for show.
Prado is hatching a scheme to the police to find Freebo's body, but Dexter has already disposed of it. Later that night, the two swap stories about their awful father.
I do like Cheerios. Any more action from Cheerios Man?
After finding out that Cheerios man is a registered sex offender, Dexter stalks him as his latest victim, but since the guy hasn't actually killed anybody, Dex says he isn't allowed to kill him, per his code. Soon after, Dexter, Rita, and the kids are on the beach, when Dexter spots Cheerios Man, this time with a camera taking photos of children.
Last week Angel and Quinn uncovered evidence that would have cleared a man being prosecuted by Prado? What happened there?
The now-convicted man is sentenced. Prado essentially ignored the new witness.
What I liked
As thrilled as Dexter was the Prado is covering for him, he also sees that Prado sees this as a partnership of sorts, and he quickly becomes annoyed with his new partner. The show's funniest moment happens at a yoga class that Dexter refers to as "the worst moment in my life." The way Dexter manipulates things to give the cops Jane Doe's name is genius. This move also takes the focus of the two murders off of Freebo.
So is Freebo's body found by anyone other than Dexter or Prado?
No.
Does the non-killing child predator land up wrapped in plastic at a custom-built Dexter kill house?
No.
Will he show up next week to plague Dexter?
Doubtful.
How does it end?
Remember Prado's bloody shirt from last week? It comes back to say hello. And Dexter finds a certain lover of Cheerios at home on this laptop looking at some recently taken photos.
