Hey, everyone. “Moriarty” here.
By now, about 47,000 of you have e-mailed me to tell me that the DARK KNIGHT trailer’s online officially. And that’s in an hour. I’m impressed. You guys are officially rabid, and there’s no two ways about it.
And I don’t blame you a bit.
First, let me say that Wally Pfister is a damn genius. That guy makes some really sexy images, and working with Nolan, the two of them seem to be pushing each other to greater extremes. This trailer’s really extreme and dense and lush and full of some startling, iconic imagery. I love the Batman march for the Nolan series, and in each trailer, I love it more. I have come full circle on this score after living with it for a while, and now I’m excited to hear what they’ve done with it for this film.
But most of all... there’s Heath. Holy shit. Even in the small doses we’re getting, he’s from outer space. That diseased voice of his, the droll delivery of “Here’s my card.” I’ve always said that when the Joker makes a joke, he should be the only one in the room who laughs. Everyone else should want to throw up. So far, what we’ve seen of this new Joker seems to be a wholly new take, building on the great work that past actors have done but also contributing something to it, something fresh. No easy feat.
Also, am I insane, or is there a giant Wyoming-sized spoiler at 1:56 in this trailer? I’d heard a rumor that this happens, and that it changes Dent and Wayne forever, but I find it hard to believe it’s actually in the trailer. Maybe they’re fucking with expectations and intentionally misleading. Either way, it’s provocative.
Even more provocative are the glimpses of what happens (the better your resolution, the more detail you’ll see) to Harvey, including the moment where he gets changed, and then one shot (at about 2:03) after he’s made the change to Two-Face. Is he burnt, or is it acid scarring? There’s a fair amount of conversation about that already.
Whatever the case, I can’t wait. It’s a great campaign, another great trailer, and if they get Batman fans any more worked up at this point, they’re going to give them all heart attacks.
Download it for yourself and check it out in the highest resolution you can.
