Wow, I like this spy. First off, he's a fellow fat dude like me, he has a relationship with Marlene, and he's connected with everybody. It looks like we have a new spy here that hopefully will be contributing often from inside Disney Feature Animation. He's not a bitter fellow, but rather one that sees things as they really are, and to us at AICN... that's a plus. I'm dying to hear more about this sequence. Will it be the jazzy 6 or 10 piece band version or the full blown orchestra version? I don't know, but whatever it is.... I'm ready for it. Hirschfield is one of my fave artists, and to see his style... animated and to Gershwin... Well... color me anxious. Here's old Hank....
Most people think that I died at the end of TOUCH OF EVIL, but I, Hank Quinlan decided that the grown up world was too much for me. So Tanya and I left the border and moved North. After healing up from my injuries, I used my contacts from my Law Enforcement career, got ahold of J Edgar and wound up with an introduction with Walt, and soon I found myself from a bottle of the hard stuff to the ink and paint department.
I was tired of the ugly side of life, I wanted to bring light into the lives of humanity. When your eyes have seen what mine have, you care not for the shadows anymore.
So Harry, I come to you as a contributor, and what I have for you today is my first report. Investigating has always been a love of mine, and since I’m on the inside here at my old friend Walt’s place, I figure I’ll shoot straight with ya from time to time on things here, as well as what I hear from other animated companies that I’m privvy to.
There is another piece to be added to fantasia 2000 that was hastily yet of course brilliantly assembled by Susan and Eric Goldberg. You know Eric of course, but his wife Susan deserves just as much accolade as he. She was the art director, but really so much more, of both "Carnival of the Animals" and this new segment "Rhapsody in Blue." This is a Hirschfeld style short about a day in the life of a bunch of New Yorkers set to the famous Gershwin tune which was composed in 3 weeks back in 1924.
Some of you may remember the tune from Woody Allen’s MANHATTAN or from that United Airlines commercial from yesteryear. They put the bored and worried artists from "Kingdom of the Sun" to the task, and they lived up to their brilliant reputations. Disney hires the very best artists in the whole world.....and then they scour the very dregs of society for the most immature, inept, insecure, evil toads they can unearth and call them managers. It truly is a testament to the talent of those great artists that what ends up on the screen looks as cool as it does. Believe me, with the managers they have it is a wonder that anything at all gets done.
Harry, I hope you get excited by this news. I have many more reports I can give to you. And I hope to. But for now, Tanya is pulling out the Tarot cards and looking wistfully into my eyes. I have to go, she calls for me.
Hank Quinlan
