Dear lord. No. I swear I will scream a horrified scream of agony if.... Jim Carrey were ever to be cast as Peter Parker. As for Ron Howard. Hmmmm.... In my geek boy frenzied mind, I would never ever ever accept him happily as the director of SPIDER-MAN, I'd bitch and moan for years, and ultimately Ron Howard may very well have kicked my gonads through the top of my head with a jaw-dropping cool movie, but he'd be starting of with low expectations from me. Ultimately the effects of SPIDER-MAN are powerfully important, but the angle that Howard would bring to the table is Richie Cunningham. Who was the high school/college geek that was straight laced as could be. Picked on, but who secretly wanted to don the costume of the FONZ and get all the chicks. I think Ron could really 'GET' Peter Parker, who for me is the heart of the story, and for me... that's the most important key to the film. But, Ron.... PLEASE DON'T CONSIDER FOR A NANOSECOND JIM CARREY.... If you pursue this film, and you get the 'gig', find someone new. Someone, that when we look at them all we can see is.... PETER PARKER. It needs to be an actor with zero baggage (this is a note to all you other directors that may be considering the film as well). Sure, it's tough... It's risky. But don't start shooting till you are 5000% positive that you have found PETER PARKER. Oh... and remember, that actor doesn't ever need to be in the costume. That could be Jet Li or a CGI actor. Sigh.... Well... Be prepared for some nasty Talk Backs...
In the Dayton Daily News today, there is an article regarding the new Spiderman film. Marilyn Beck reports that she spoke with Ron Howard at the Universal Studios Florida themepark where he was researching the Suess Landing area for "The Grinch" film. The article states that Howard made the point of saying that now that James Cameron has dropped out of the Spiderman film running, "the rights are up for grabs. That point definately hasn't escaped my attention." The short article goes on to say that Carrey, who is playing the Grinch himself, would make a great Spiderman. I really hope that if Howard does become attached to the project, he leaves Carrey behind in Whoville.
