Yeah, But...Will A Crappy Movie Be Better When Seen In An Expensive MegaTheater??

Variety has an interesting piece about a wave of forthcoming uber-theaters, which are to offer super-comfortable seating, upscale concessions, high-end projection (Digital 2D and 3D), and various other amenities...all at escalated ticket prices. The business folk putting these plans into motion feel that improving the theater-going experience might help get more people into auditoriums, despite the "recession". I am a presentation snob & will regularly and deliberately snub "traditional" screenings in favor of a digital presentation. But, as much as I love movies, I can't imagine shelling out the kind of money they're talking about here (which enough to purchase a video game that would entertain me for months, two Blu-Rays...if you shop right, or a decent spot at a rock concert) - especially given the wildly uneven quality of product these days. And even if I was willing to do so, I'm not sure I'd be able to do so. I'm not sure many people would be able to do so.

Idea is that plushing up the current moviegoing experience will encourage auds that typically stay home to watch movies via their pricey home theaters to venture out again
