FANBOYS gets two versions... but what about a theatrical release?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I have to imagine it's a point of pride with the Weinsteins now... I can't believe they'd really struggle so hard for so long with this movie. I had occasion to talk to one of the producers of this movie a little while back. Apparently, the producers are unified behind the regular, cancer version of the movie, Kevin Spacey included. Apparently, the test screening scores for the two versions are only 2 points apart, so it's not a strong point there... The movie could not work. That's possible. They might not know what to do with it... but I think if they're that unsure, why go against the producers, director, screenwriter and fans and keep this debate going? In what would look like a white flag move, The Weinsteins announced (after a fan boycott of SUPERHERO movie this weekend) that both versions will be out on DVD. There's a rumor out there that they're also exploring two possible theatrical cuts (although they still haven't figured out when they're going to release it). Why? Won't that be confusing? Unless they do some sort of R-Rated and PG-13 rated release.. which I like the premise of, but if the real difference really is just a sub-plot about a character that has cancer, then it'll be a cop-out if that's how they advertise it. Listen guys. It's not hard. This isn't something you developed in-house. You found it, picked it up. Trust in that initial gut reaction. Market the hell out of Kristen Bell and Seth Rogen. Placate the fans and release the version they're dedicated to seeing. If you want your other cut out there, package it with the cut everyone wants to see. Hell, if it's a success, you can even double-dip. You like doing that, right? You keep dicking with it the fans will just lose interest or get pissed off. You're cutting your nose off to spite your face here, I think. Seriously, it isn't that hard. This couldn't have cost that much to make. Pick a release date, put some dough pushing the big comedic names you already have, slap their faces on all the posters and billboards and cut a funny trailer. Easy money. Why's this so difficult?
