Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here. I’ve never heard of this one, but I have a shameless crush on Michelle Yeoh, and I’ll see anything with her in it. So tell me, Mastidon... will I be satisfied?
FAR NORTH - 3 1/2 stars (Out of 5) Written / Directed by Asif Kapadia Starring Michelle Yeoh, Michelle Krusiec, Sean Bean Hi Guys, Mastidon here with a review of a film I wanted to see in Venice but couldn't - FAR NORTH. I was lucky enough to meet one of the cast members on my first day there and have wanted to see it ever since. Thanks to the London Film Festival, I was finally able to catch it and bring you this review. Filmed on location in the far north of Norway, I can honestly say I got cold watching this film. Ice and snow everywhere . The feeling of isolation and of desolation. Absolutely A+ cinematography. I just wish the story was as strong. ***SPOILERS**** FAR NORTH follows the story of two women who live alone on the tundra. The older raised the younger from birth. Doing whatever they can to survive. At one point they kill and eat one of their sled dogs. Living in constant fear of being attacked and without any other human interaction, they are always on the move whenever people are near. We do learn how the two came to live together and the real reason for the perpetual fear. This is done over a flashback sequence. One day the older woman finds an injured soldier (Sean Bean) stumbling along the ice. The two women nurse him back to health. As a result, both start obsessing over him and competing for his affections. The soldier eventually makes a choice between the two. As a result, imagine the world's craziest ending and that's it. The ending is just plane wrong feeling totally out of place for the rest of the film. ***END SPOILERS**** As a whole, FAR NORTH is a beautifully shot film that does an excellent job of conveying the desolation and loneliness of the tundra. Where it falls down is having enough of a story to make it more than just stunning photography. Great to see on the big screen especially if you think of it more as an IMAX FAR NORTH experience. Ciao for now, -Mastidon
