I am – Hercules!!
“Online Nation” is a home-grown riot, maybe the funniest new half-hour on the networks this fall. If I laughed this much at “MadTV,” I’d watch it every week.
“Online” moves fast, and some of the shorts on this YouTube-inspired series are a lot better than others, but it’s well worth sitting through a few quick streches of lame to get to the truly inspired material. Some highlights:
* “Britney’s Having A Breakdown,” from “Daniel, Sherman Oaks, Calif.,” is a sharp, slick and suspiciously professional-looking animated look at a Perot-like Britney Spears yammering through a visit with her general practioner.
* “Byte Me,” from “Gabriel, Keystone Heights, Fla.,” is an animated parody of the Mac/PC commercials utilizing characters who look just like Kyle and Stan from “South Park.” (It’s just one of three Mac/PC parodies featured in the first episode.)
* “Shady Trick,” from “Ariane, New York, N.Y.” is a brilliantly surreal piece about a couple of guys who have grown expert at flinging sunglasses onto each other’s faces.
* “Shell Shocked,” from “Dane, Bakersfield, Calif.,” about a dozen eggs who learn an omelet is being prepared.
* “Dating For Dummies,” from “Reid, New York, N.Y.,” is a perfect little quickie about romantic etiquette.
* “Fast Food Rap,” from “Joe, Fort Wayne Ind.,” offers a rhyming drive-through order (it’s much better than it sounds).
* “Super-Hero Surprise,” from “Derek, Oklahoma City, Okla.,” depicts a bad day in the life of The Batman. (As wonderful as it is, one wonders if CW co-owner Time Warner didn’t order “Surprise” pulled off of YouTube at some point!)
There are also stunts caught on tape – involving a giant slingshot, a trampoline and exploding bottles of pop – that in no way would look out of place on “Jackass.”
Easily the worst element of the show is its hosts. Online rappers Rhett McLaughlin and Lincoln Neal were apparently hired not because they were the funniest online personalities (they’re not even the funniest rappers on “Online Nation”), but because they were the most camera-friendly. Or maybe because one of them is the nephew of a CW exec. Rhett and Linc have got to go go gooooooo!
7:30 p.m. Sunday. The CW.
