I am – Hercules!!
I read a review recently that hailed “The Closer” as the best show on basic cable.
“Closer” is a swell show, to be certain, but everyone else has to be aware that this point that “The Venture Bros.” is best show on basic cable. It is followed closely by “Battlestar Galactica.” And “South Park.”
And then there is “Rescue Me,” from the fertile mind of Peter Tolan, who wrote more episodes of “The Larry Sanders Show” (the best live-action American sitcom in history) that any other man alive.
Tolan and longtime collaborator Denis Leary are in their fourth season on “Rescue Me,” and one senses the FX execs may not be handing them as many notes these days.
Tonight’s episode has a sight gag involving a chunk of latticework that was so funny I’m still laughing out loud about it a week later. The episode boasts many other virtues, but the latticework gag is funnier than any of us deserve.
Next week’s episode opens with a Tommy Gavin’s teen daughter, angry and stripped down to her thong underwear.
Kindly watch this show.
10 p.m. Wednesday. FX.
