Headgeek Harry Knowles has already singled out the set I intended to single out this week. Singled out the set and my most beloved element of that set. Picket Fences debuted in 1992. It was the first series created by David E. Kelley, who had come out of great success with the NBC blockbuster “L.A. Law.” It arrived the year after “Twin Peaks,” the second-best TV series ever forged, closed shop. “Peaks” was for Kelley an oft-cited influence. He even cast “Peaks” icon Michael J. Anderson (the backwards-talking dream-dwarf) as a memorable romantic interest for Maxine Stewart, the alluring deputy sheriff assayed by Lauren Holly. “Fences” was a comedy-drama initially built around a small town sheriff and small-town doctor who were married to each other. The premise, in theory, would enable Kelley to tell all sorts of cop and medical stories. The series’ scene stealer was Fyvush Finkel, who played defense attorney Doug Wambaugh. Finkel had two years earlier fleetingly played hilarious defense attorney Preston Pearlstein in Sidney Lumet’s “Q&A.” (“Q&A” is a great great great and criminally underseen movie, by the way. Harry might consider wedging it into some future BNAT.) Wambaugh wasn’t necessarily intended as a regular, but Kelley – an attorney before he got into the TV game – couldn’t leave the courtroom behind with “L.A. Law”; events would inevitably careen into a Rome, Wis., courtroom. This turned out to be a boon not only to Finkle, but to “Fast Times At Ridgemont High” vet Ray Walston (who portrayed long-suffering judge Henry Bone) and future movie star Don Cheadle (who served as Rome prosecutor John Littleton). Running concurrently with “Chicago Hope” and “Northern Exposure” in the 1990s, “Fences” exemplifies CBS’ last great era of scripted hourlong storytelling.
