NBC Debuts Edition Five
Of LAST COMIC STANDING!!

I am – Hercules!!
I loved the first couple of seasons of “Last Comic Standing,” I truly did, but I found last year’s edition grew nigh unwatchable. Everbody had to live on the docked Queen Mary, presumably because NBC got to use it cheap. Producers kicked off the funniest guy, Gabriel Inglesias, for using a cell phone, and the home viewers gave the grand prize to the rather less-inspired cerebral palsy victim Josh Blue. The good news this year is Alonzo Bodden and Kathleen Madigan, two comics (and former LCS contestants) who have made me laugh on occasion, have replaced the two “Tonight Show With Jay Leno” bookers as talent scouts. Hopefully these two will be more concerned with who’s funny rather than who would make a good reality show contestant. (If one puts five genuinely funny people in a house, only entertainment can emerge. The first season worked with only two genuinely funny guys – Dave Mordal and Ralphie May – who effectively shored up the series by making endless sport of their less talented brethren.) The bad news is Bodden and Madigan are joined at the judging table by relentlessly unfunny fellow contestant Ant. And former “Fastlane” star Bill Bellamy has somehow been tapped to serve as the show’s new host. Was Philip Michael Thomas busy? I have to say, I never find myself bored by any of the early casting sessions. Now that the show has gone international, will deep-pocketed wannabe Buck Starr turn up at the London and Sydney calls? 9 p.m. Wednesday. NBC.
