If memory serves (and right now...after the open bar of EDtv's party memory very well be majorly fucked up) Chris Squared was a symbiotic duo of Chris' that came from far away in west Texas to attend SXSW. I remember them from a brief chat at the Jack Hill presentation at THE BIG DOLL HOUSE and THE BIG BIRD CAGE... as well as a momentary exchanging of cool greetings at the SPIDER BABY and SWITCHBLADE SISTERS outdoor extravaganza. They traveled hundreds of miles to experience SXSW.... was it worth it? Read and find out...
..jumping on the band wagon here' s a few quickie reviews of my all-too-short trip to Austin..oh, this is one of the two Chris that were at SxSW..we chatted with you for a little while in line for The Big Doll House..
*These may be spiked with minor spoliers, but nothing as major as what you could find in the SxSW film book*
Happy, Texas-
Think of all those movies with prisoners on the lamb impersonating
someone else..(was I the only one to draw a Nuns On The Run
connection?).
What makes this movie worth your time is _GREAT_ acting.
Ignore the 'thief grows a heart' plot.
Steve Zahn steals the show as the not-too-bright Wayne Wayne Wayne
Jr..and William H. Macy gives us another top notch performance as
Happy's sensitive sheriff.
Be on the look out for the weirdest cover of a Bjork song towards the
end(I'm a Bjork fan)..

Those crazy Canadians! This is probably the strangest of the dark
comedies at SxSW. A mysterious magical book is the center of the
plot..the only person that looks familiar is that guy whole plays the
whiny office worker Worth in Cube (David Hewlett). Too silly to be a
drama...too twisted to be a full blown 'funny-like-a-clown movie'.
Bottom Line: Un-even, and kinda pointless
There's No Fishfood In Heaven
Robert Rodriguez's panel-
The Birth Announcement of his son-words don't give this justice, if I
can snag some digi-video software, I'll post a link.
Fight Of The Century- Apparently Robert works out/boxes with a
friend..on one occasion, Robert asked if they could film him and his
friend (his name slips my mind, sorry) fighting. He edits the video and
makes it look like RR beats the living crap out of his friend! Chock
full of Rocky-esq sound effects and slow motion..
Serious Coolness.
Jack Hill Presentation >BE?Part One..indoors.. >BR?The first movie was okay, but Big Bird Cage BLEW THE BALLS OFF OF EVERYONE!!! Sid Haig WAS FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC, MAN!! I swear that he is probably the best thing that came out of the 70s!! I'm not kidding!! _Everything_ was over the top! Sex! Violence! Flaming Gay Characters! And plenty of HUMOR!! WOOOOOO!!!
Part Two..outdoor screening..
What hasn't already been said about this movie? All I want to add is
that at points during that night, I swore I was at a busy beach, people
for as long as the eye can see cuddling on beach blankets and swilling
cheap beer..When I went to what I really hope was the bathroom, Sid 'The
Man' Haig was in line and someone remarked that this was what SxSW was
all about: standing in line with the stars..
Loved your intro to Switchblade Sisters! If my camcorder taping of it
comes out alright, you'll look pretty freakin cool with a greenish Night
lens tint..
Your Panel-
Go
A Day in Black & White
I had to leave the festival due to budget woes, but I had a blast..
before I leave, I'd just like to comment that the comic shops in Austin
were INCREDIBLY NICE..if one store didn't have the item I was looking
for, they would go out of the way and call up the others to help me find
it!
Thank you kindly,
One of the Many Chris-es
Tagline: "Life Begins At 3AM" - I _really_ dug the atmosphere of the
small theater. Surrounded by college kids with promotional
glow-in-the-dark bracelets thingies. Everything worked for this film,
the thumping techno/rave soundtrack (supplied by BT), the acting, and
the plot. My only beef is that in the end, it seems a little too good,
as if everyone didn't get what they deserved..did that make any sense?
Another flick I dug..itsa comedy that will make you think..and it will
catch you seeing your views on screen..
What goes through your head when you see a black teen running with a
back pack, and two white kids running after him?
Stuff like that..but don't for a second think that this is your average
After school special..this film is FUNNY!!
*The pilgrim/white kid/stuffed-sausage flashbacks are priceless*
