Doctor Who Gridlock
There’s an old expression in TV, when you have to do something on the cheap, it’s called a “Standing Set” show. Which means, you do a show with no new sets or with only the sets that are currently standing. Tonight’s “Doctor Who” was as close as they have ever done to your typical “Standing Set” show. But the odd thing is, it was a great episode.
First thing I’ve noticed this year, is they are starting episodes a lot like they used to in the 70’s and 80’s with establishing shots and scenes set on the Doctor’s destination, and not with the main characters. Tonight was saw New, New York again, but from a different perspective. The view of it in tiny box cars underneath the city. There are tons and tons of them, and before the opening credits there is one less, killed or destroyed by someone or something. It was a good way to start the episode, complete with the couple from the “American Gothic” painting.
The Doctor and Martha soon arrive and are split up, the next twenty-five minutes of the show consist of the Doctor hopping from box car to box car looking for Martha. Now of course they only made one, or maybe two of these and just re-dressed them for the people in them. Seems the traffic jam in the underground is so bad, it takes years just to move a mile or two.
In the meantime, “The Face of Bow” and his nurse are looking for the Doctor, for what will probably be the last time. Since last year we were told that the next time they meet, it would be the last and a great secret would be revealed.
While I started off not liking this episode so much, by the time it was over, and the Doctor saves the day again, it was pretty damn good. Even though it was cheaper than most episodes and hopefully this will be, this year’s “Love and Monsters”. Although I doubt it. As for the “Face Of Bow” the secret he imparts is, that the Doctor is not alone, as in, he is not the only Timelord left. This opens up great number of possibilities in the series, while it’s even money the Master will return, I’m betting on Romana, I would give my left elbow, to see Lala Ward come back on the show.
While this year of “Doctor Who” is getting off to a good start, next week we once again are being exposed to the Daleks, well, at least one Dalek. Now it’s OK to bring them back from time to time, but EVERY FREAKING SEASON? It’s stupid, each Doctor is really only suppose to meet them one or twice, not once or twice a season. So tonight’s “Gridlock” gets a big thumbs up, but Russell seriously… enough with Daleks, we get it already! Do something original for god’s sake.
Just my 2¢

Hey Herc,
Just caught the latest ep of Doctor Who, and thought I'd share my thoughts.
What's it called?
Gridlock
When in the worlds are they?
The Doctor makes his second trip to New New York, the planet where the cat-people were dosing humans up with all kinds of lurgy. Martha's visiting New New York for the first time, and quickly discovers that Rose had been there before. They hit New Earth about thirty years after the events of the cat-people episode.
What's the sitch?
Martha is kidnapped by a pair of desperate travellers looking to qualify for the fast lane of the city's congested motorway system. On awakening from her kidnapper's sedative, she discovers that the kidnappers aren't really bad people, they're making a ten mile trip and she'll be released once they get there.
So what's the problem?
The motorway is so congested that the journey will take about six years, and that's in the fast lane. They are not alone. The motorway is full of people. Some of them have been travelling for over twenty years without reaching a final destination. Also, there are hushed stories about the fast lane. Word on the 'way is that it's not a nice place, and there's more truth than legend to the myths.
Where's the Doctor?
On the motorway in a different car, trying to find Martha.
Any other familiar faces?
One biggie. Bo! Plus, evil cat-woman from earlier episode.
What's good?
It's a well-paced number which hits a number of Whovian buttons. The relationship between the Doctor and Martha gets out of the starting blocks, there are some nice action sequences and the season arc is advanced with a deathbed confession. Ardal O'Hanlon ( Father Dougal from Father Ted ) appears in full cat make-up, but has the distinction of being instantly recognisable. He brings a lot of energy into the episode. Great Coruscant-esque shots of a future world. Liddle puddycats.
What's not so good?
The villains of the piece aren't that great. Giant crabs with giant pincers, and that's about your lot. Apparently they used to have a human enslavin' empire, but the Doctor reckons they have de-evolved into beasts. Beasts seem to be a theme of this season. The kidnappers are also a bit wet.
Kid-friendly?
Yeah, unless they're really scared of crabs.
How does it end, spoiler boy?
Evil cat nurse turns out not to be so evil at all. She's paid penance for her previous sins by serving the face of Bo.
Most of New New York was wiped out twenty five years before the Doctor's arrival due to some dodgy virus-laden drugs. The Face of Bo had been using his energy to keep the undercity and motorway, the only surviving areas of the city, alive.
A great little sequence shows just how effective daylight can be, as the Doctor and Bo work together to release the inhabitants of the motorway into the wider, now safe city. The Face of Bo, exhausted through his efforts, dies shortly after saving the day - but not before doing a Yoda-esque "there is another" number on our favourite timelord. The city sings in unison, and the Doctor finally comes clean with Martha about the fate of his people.
Overall?
A great episode that does some justice to the future, moves things on and has a sweet emotional core. Truly greater than the sum of its parts. More like this, please.
A solid four stars out of five.

Greetings from New Earth! Tonight in the UK the Doctor returned to this planet with Martha. He meets the Face of Boe again and one of the Cat-Nurses. It's very difficult to say much about the plot without giving too much away, but the setting is superbly realised. New New York has constructed a super-motorway which is perpetually Gridlocked. The Doc and Martha find themselves on separate vehicles and the Doctor's efforts to be reunited echo Obi-Wan and Anakin's early chase in Attack of the Clones. The comparison is not a slight one, as the special effects in this episode are very special indeed. It also has heart to spare.
The motorway vehicles are populated by incredibly winsome characters who provide a lot of humour. There is (I think!) an monster-of-the-week from way back. Or perhaps they just used the name without thinking! What goes around comes around. Who knows.
At the end of the episode the fate of the Time Lords arc is revisited and a hint is given of events to come (which can't be a secret to anybody even slightly inclined to dig on the net). The only slightly jarring thing in the show is Tennant's occasional tendency to go over the top with his anger schtick, which we've seen before. It's minor, because I felt this story was great rather than good. Classic Who. They are really getting into their stride now and the series is shaping up to be the best of the resurrection. Next week....New York, Daleks and..........pigs?
