Well here we have more SUNDANCE QUALIFIERS!!! You probably won't be hearing about these films till Wednesday when the official announcement is, but dammit, I figured yall deserved to know. Let's start off with news from the Sundancing Nicholas Brothers divulged this info on some of the official SUNDANCE documentaries...
Here are some official SUNDANCE documentaries that are in competition:
Penelope Spheeris' new documentary DECLINE OF WESTERN CIV. PART III
Barbara Kopples (Harlan County, American Dream) new doc. on Woody Allen that Woody paid for and had final cut on!! (remember Crimes and Misdemeanors?)
Todd Phillips' (Hated: GG Allin & The Murder Junkies) excellent documentary is called FRAT HOUSE by the way, not FRATS.
Steve Yeagers documentary on John Waters called DIVINE TRASH - includes never seen before footage of Pink Flamingos.
Then there was another Sundancer named Eleanor Powell, who tapped in this report on another Sundance film, WITH OR WITHOUT YOU...
This ain't particularly exciting information, nor is it terribly complete, but I know of another film that's gonna be playing at Sundance. It's called "With or Without You." No, it's not the U2 story (thank GOD). It was directed by a Minneapolis-area director (who's name eludes me for the moment ).
It's a great movie -- a gen-x romance but with a little more grit than we're used to. Make that a lot more grit -- the main female character, Zoe, is quite psychopathic and self-serving but somehow -- somehow -- you'll end up loving her by the end of the film. There's one little flaw in the film, a stereotypical "geek" character who speaks in Star Trek lingo (whoops!) but in all, it's a terrific movie with a lovable script.
The score is very "indie rock" but in a good way. There's a sex scene in there that's gonna kick everyone's ass and the music to it is great.
Watch for this one -- mega mondo gen-x hit, I swear it.
Then there is this flick. LAND GIRLS is another film that is going to Sundance!!! I know NOTHING about this film. But looks like ye Sundancers will get to view it.
Then this Sundancer Mr Bojangles let loose with this flick called BILLY'S HOLLYWOOD SCREEN KISS is in Sundance!!!
I'm excited to let you know about a picture entitled "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss" that has landed in the Sundance Film Festival in the competition bracket. This is a seriously fun movie about a struggling gay photographer who falls in love with one of his straight male models. "Is he or isn't he" and "will he or won't he?" are the big questions here and a comedy of errors ensues as the hero tries to make the most of his new found friendship. The film is peppered with some dazzeling, innovative dream sequences that are sure to suprise and please even the jaded audiences in Park City.
The writer/director, Tommy O'Haver, has one of the sharpest cinematic eyes around and this anamorphic movie really shows it off. He's got a genuine love of movies of all kinds and it really shows in this homage to 40's melodrama. Other key crew members that shine brightly are cinematographer Mark Mervis, actors Sean P. Hayes, Brad Rowe, and Meredith Scott Lynn.
There should be an official announcement Wednesday about what is in SUNDANCE, so watch for it. I can't wait to hear what all has made it besides these.
