“You actually think I was the mastermind behind the largest terrorist attack in the history of the world?”
I am – Hercules!!
JERICHO 1.12 FAQ
What’s it called?
“The Day Before.”
Who’s Responsible?
Teleplay is credited to Mike Kelley (“One Tree Hill,” “The O.C.”).
What does TV Guide say?
“A flashback through the 36 hours before the bombs exploded sheds light on the actions of Jake and Hawkins, and reveals Hawkins' compliance in the events. Roger Hammond: Christopher Wiehl. Freddie Ruiz: Mark Adair-Rios.”
It’s been a while alright! Remind us: Does Luke Perry played Jake or Hawkins? And is he still getting along with that rascally Kurdy?
You’re thinking of Showtime’s post-apocalyptic drama “Jeremiah,” which transmitted its last episode in 2004. This is CBS’ “Jericho,” which kicks off 11 new episodes in a row tonight.
Do we finally learn what Jake was doing for the five years prior to the nuclear attacks?
In the very first scene, we get a couple of big clues as to where Jake has been and who he’s been working for at least 20 months of those five years. Bigger clues come later in the episode.
Do we learn if Jake was working for the CIA?
No.
Was Jake in the Navy, like he told the dead storekeeper?
We don’t learn.
Was he playing minor league baseball, like he told Emily?
Not among the revelations this week!
Where was Jake 36 hours before the bombs went off?
San Diego.
Do we really learn a lot about Hawkins this week?
Yes. His story is the reason to watch this week. There is more to him than I, at least, suspected.
If this is set only 36 hours before the bombs, isn’t Hawkins already in Jericho?
No. His story begins in D.C.
The big news?
Before teaser’s end, we get a look at the faces of those who helped orchestrate the nuclear attack.
What else is TV Guide not telling us?
A name comes up in Jake’s story that we’ve heard before. A name that assumes greater importance this week than previously.
Does this prequel episode follow only Jake and Hawkins?
No. The episode focuses mostly on Hawkins and Jake, but there’s some (perfectly disposable) stuff set in the title municipality. All there is foreshadowing as we visit Jake’s dad, mom, brother and sister-in-law, the hot bartender, Emily and her fiancé, the farmboy and his girl from Internal Revenue.
Got anything a little meatier, Herc old man?
Invisotext on! In the first act, we see a list labeled “final list of intended targets.” On the list:
Washington, D.C.
Philadelphia
Los Angeles
New York
Denver
Dallas
St. Louis
Chicago
What’s good?
The Hawkins stuff, which harbors the biggest reveals. The Jake stuff, which I think maybe reveals the Big Bad if you listen carefully. And wet “A.I.” fembot Ashley Scott in a fluffy white towel.
What’s not so good?
The Hawkins story is so compelling it almost overwhelms Jake’s. Also? Not one hot hearing-impaired teen this entire hour!
How does it end, spoiler-boy?
"Actually, I do," replies a refugee.
Herc’s rating for “Jericho” 1.12?

8 p.m. Wednesday. CBS.
