Well, here's the first few tidbits I've heard about these projects in a billion years, has anyone else heard about these projects? Curious...
Yesterday evening 02,23,99 I was priviliged enough to meet the esteemed Britsh Author John le Carre, famous for his cold war spy novels of betrayal and cunning. Many of his book have been filmed, perhaps the most famous is "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold", made in the 1960s with Richard Burton as the hero.
Mr Le Carre and I spoke at length about his book " The Night Manager" which Sydney Pollack is set to Direct, Le Carre, ( a true gentleman and consumate artist) told me that Robert Towne had written a script for Pollack but it stank (My words, not his, he is far too gracious) and a second script is now being written.
Then he told me he had recently been scouting locations in Panama with TONY SCOTT, it turns out TONY has bought the film rights to Le Carre's last book The Tailor of Panama, a script has been approved and they are casting the film as we speak.
The book tells the tale of an east end tailor called Harry Pendel who becmes an unwitting pawn in the machinations of a treacherous British agent called Andy Osnard, the book owes a great debt to Graham Greene's classic Our Man in Havana ( filmed with Alec Guiness). It is a terrific read and an unusual choice (perhaps) for Tony Scott. We shall see.
