Weresmurf Interviews Jason Todd Ipson, Director Of UNREST!!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here. Weresmurf is a horror junkie. When I’m in our chat room and I’ve just come from a screening of THE HITCHER remake, Were’s the one who I know I’ll be able to talk to about it because (A) he actually wants to see it and (B) he actually loves the original. So I’m glad to see he’s enjoying doing these horror interviews and that he’s set up a podcast where he can talk about his love of the genre. Here’s the latest.

Hey guys, back for… god knows how many times this makes right now??? So Moriarty said I’d been bitten by the bug last time… I don’t think he’s right. In fact I think he’s way off base. I’d say it’s more along the lines of ‘mauled by one of the arachnids from Starship Troopers’ lol. Anyhow! THIS week, my website brings you via Aint It Cool News in all its graciousness, an evening with Jason Todd Ipson! Well ok maybe not an evening, but an hour was pretty damn cool. Below, again, I’ve transcribed some of the interview for you regarding his new movie, Unrest, which to me, looks like it’s gonna be something pretty damn cool. Enjoy! Remember… W for Weresmurf, J for Jason… not the other way round! -------------------------- W: So tell me about Unrest? J: Unrest is a horror film, I call it a medical thriller, that’s about four medical students going through their Gross Anatomy Class which is the first class you have in medical school, where you dissect the bodies and the lead actress is haunted by the premonitions of their cadaver and it kinda spirals out from there. W: Ah that would be the blonde girl I saw in the trailer? J: Yeah Corri English, who did a great job and opposite her was a guy named Scot Davis and Joshua Alba, Jessicas brother, and J Jablonski, they were rounded out that way, four main guys. W: I SAW the Alba name there and I was wondering if they were any relation! J: Yeah Josh is Jessicas brother, he’s a good guy. W: Jessica never dropped by the set I take it? J:She did, she did actually, wait woah woah I didn’t mean to mislead, no she didn’t come by the set, we shot in a different state, but she came by Horrorfest, she came to the premiere parties to support her brother which was really cool -------------------- When asked about if the plot of Unrest was loosely based on any incidents in his life: J: Third year medical school, I did some rotations at the local VA Hospital and theres these corridors that go all under the hospital, theres a hospital complex is like, 34 buildings and they’re all connected by these giant interconnecting tunnels and the thing that’s just amazing is you’d be on call at like 2 or 3 in the morning walking around these hallways on your own, and you can feel, I don’t wanna sound crazy, but you can feel the sensation of the spirits watching you and haunting those hallways, and if you talk to any of the people at the VA who work there, they all believe they’re haunted. -------------------- W: Every movie you can put in a mish mash of references, I mean not references, you can look at a bunch of other movies and say did you get inspiration from here, here, here and here. Did you get any sort of, just the way the trailer felt, did you get any inspiration from any of the Japanese horror movies like The Grudge or the Ring or anything? J: I love that you ask that questions because it brings up a number of variables… W: Sorry it’s not meant to be insulting or anything! J: No, no no, it’s actually interesting, and the purpose of your show is to illuminate kinda the different directors perspectives. I’m actually a director where if I’m doing a project, I will not watch that genre for exactly the reason you’re bringing it up, and so, for me, like I did Unrest as a horror film and didn’t watch any horror films for 2... Maybe 3 years leading up to that, because I was working on a film before that called “The First Vampire” which was my thesis film at USC (sp?). And so, I was so far removed from the horror genre, because I believe you need to, now the film I did after Unrest, I directed a film called ‘Everybody wants to be Italian’, which is coming out in america, this summer. W: A romantic comedy isn’t it? J: Yeah it’s a romantic comedy, so I didn’t watch any romantic comedies, so now those two movies are laid to rest, I have gone back and watched all the horror movies that have been out since then and its funny to me, I love Ring, I thought Ring was awesome, both American version and Ringu and its funny, Im flattered to be compared to those guys cause I think they’re doing some creative and clever use of fear… W: I think one could say it’s though that it’s similar themes though that brings about the similarity? J: Mmhmm, yeah cause I like the things they’ve done that I’ve seen now but I didn’t base anything on that, cause I know you haven’t seen the movie yet, but one of the things about it, actually you brought up around four different answers and responses, I really do think the trailers fantastic, but its not exactly ‘the movie’. The movie is more a slow burn, it’s more of an intellectualized creepy film, than it is actual scary, and so I think that the trailer does a great job of getting interest and getting people excited about the movie, but I don’t wanna mislead people because I think the people who go along for the ride of UNREST and enjoy it the most are the ones who don’t expect a, ah, slasher film, its not a slasher film at all. ------------------- *Note, the part about me asking and him replying about the corpses used in UNREST, takes a little while, so we’ll skip over it and give you the best answer Jason gave about using them: J: Theres only one way you can use real bodies and that’s if you have permission of the family and it’s being shown in an educational setting, so for the things we do, we were able to portray it in an educational environment, and thus we are able to get away with stuff other people can’t. So Faces of Death and some other films they talk about bein real? There’s no way they can be real, LEGALLY, there’s no way, it’s a marketing ploy that’s often used and in a way it was used on our film! W: Sorry, people, it’s not a marketing ploy when it’s real! *laughs* J: *laughs* -------------------- There we go people, a bunch of parts taken out again, another damn interesting movie director and another interview down! Hear more about working with corpses, why Jason, a fully qualified SURGEON, yes a SURGEON gave up such a lucrative life to get into such a low paying job like film making heh, how great Jessica Albas brother is to work with and why he‘s a fantastic actor in his own right, dinner with Ms Alba and dodging the paparazzi, the oh so beautiful Corri English (I’m sorry Jessica and Mena, my hearts been stolen! Oh and I‘m apparently going to be able to interview Corri!!!!! Better buy some roses…) and what exactly WAS the reason for his new movie “Everybody Wants to be Italian” getting a new lead actor at the very last moment eh? Also log in next week when Weresmurf learns grammar and how to punctuate a sentence properly! All this and more in the latest downloadable episode RIGHT HERE!! Ciao guys have fun having a listen, it’s great. Weresmurf.
