More MIGHTY JOE YOUNG news as Mr Joseph Young's further exploits at Mann's Chinese Theater are documented. Apparently, different toys were being used by the crew this night in question than the previous bit. I really really want to love this film. I'm there if it is.
I was in L.A. a couple of weeks ago and they were shooting some scenes for the remake of "Mighty Joe Young". It stars Bill Paxton, David Paymer, Charlize Theron, Naveen Andrews and others and is being directed by Ron Underwood. They were shooting right on Hollywood Blvd. right across the street from the Chinese theatre. It was a night shoot and they had the entire street blocked off for 4 or 5 blocks. They were using 150 ft. cranes to backlight the street so this was a huge production. In the scene I saw, they had a semi truck lying sideways in the middle of Hollywood Blvd. and the action had a guy holding a huge gorilla finger, poking it at people as they reacted by running away.
A guy was also holding a large disc on a stick with a picture of a gorilla on it and he'd slowly pull it away. I suppose this was to have the people react to something they'll CGI in later.
What was interesting was the marquee on the Chinese Theatre, which was currently showing "Event Horizon", was covered over with a marquee showing the movie "Armageddon". Interestingly, by the time "Mighty Joe Young" is released (probably mid-summer '98), Armageddon will be a current release giving "Mighty Joe Young" an up-to-date look. Coincidentally, both films are Buena Vista.
This spy's name will be the Chain Rattler, why, well just remember that name when you see the film, and when you hear him, smile!!!
