A brief look at ANALYZE THIS...

Saw the trailer to this not to long back and actually kind of giggled a bit at it. I'm not sure if I saw all the highlights, or if there is something more to the film, but Hanna here has seen it all...

I don't know if you can use this, but I got a chance to see Analyze This and thought I would write a little something. First off, for those who have short attention spans and don't like to read, it was a good but not great film that could and should have been better.

Robert De Niro plays Paul Vitti, head of a mafia family in New York. In the beginning of the film, he has an anxiety attack and other problems like he can't get it up and he can't kill anyone. Most horrific of all, he cried for 45 minutes when he saw a commercial with little puppies in it. Vitti decides he needs some help, so he visits a shrink named Ben Sobol (Billy Crystal).

Sobol's practice isn't too great, and he lives in the shadow of his author father. He also has a teenage son and is getting married (to Lisa Kudrow) very soon. Everyone's got problems.

Almost every scene with De Niro and Crystal is laugh-out-loud funny. Sobol is terrified of Vitti, and when he gets cocky with him you expect Vitti to beat his ass. Instead, Vitti breaks down crying. Seeing De Niro cry is almost priceless.

The entire cast is great, especially the leads. Crystal hasn't been this funny in a long time, and De Niro is not your typical mobster. Their chemistry is excellent. The movie falters towards the end though, when there is a needless shoot-out. It makes the movie feel longer than it is (about an hour and fifty minutes). There should have been more Vitti and Sobol and less mobster and wedding crap. But it's still very funny and well worth seeing for the leads.
