Until today, a season of M*A*S*H would run you about $30. Today, with the release of M*A*S*H: The Martinis and Medicine Complete Collection, you get 11 seasons for $12.73 per season. $12.73 per season is pretty much as cheap as TV seasons get. Before O.J. Simpson and George Kennedy joined the franchise, there was 1982’s way-too-funny-for-1982-TV Police Squad! It was an ABC TV series the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker team was somehow ($$$) convinced to concoct between “Airplane!” and “Top Secret!” Joe Dante, post-“Howling” but pre-“Gremlins,” directed two of the six episodes. The subsequent “The Naked Gun” series, also following the adventures of half-wit detective Frank Drebin, reaped Paramount many many millions. For a miserable $13.99, you get the 140 minutes comprising all six episodes, plus commentaries, “Behind the Freeze Frames,” the casting tests for Alan North and Ed Williams, and more.
