Who is to be Who in DOCTOR WHO'

Who fans have been waiting a long time for this feature, FATHER GEEK wishing the production company would just get on with it. The old Funting Bunion has filed a pretty good report for Who watchers, lets hope its not too far into the future...

The Funting Bunion here... Don't know if you received this already but I found this on the UK Teletext web site. It seems that Mr McGann still has aspirations to play the good Time Lord (although I have to say that 'Withnail and I' was his finest hour…). Pretty good news since a lot of people thought he was the best thing about the American Dr Who movie. Now, if only the BBC could get off their arses (all three of them) and do something about it!

Here’s a selection of how it read:

Singing a different tune - 1/2/99

Paul McGann has played some roles that other actors would die for. Critics raved about him in Our Mutual Friend, while there aren't many people who can say they've played Doctor Who on their CV.

Having played a variety of roles, which is the one McGann would consider his finest hour? "The Monocled Mutineer," he says without too much hesitation. "I was largely unknown, and as a drama it was dangerous - far more dangerous than the shows around now.

"As for the worst...well, I've made some real dogs! I won't say what in case they decide to re-release one of them in the summer!"

McGann is hoping for a second chance to step back into the TARDIS again as cult figure Doctor Who. Since starring as the Doctor in a pilot episode as the successor to Sylvestor McCoy, he has been hoping the series would be taken up again.

He told TV Plus: "We did as good a job as we could. Who knows why it wasn't taken up? I hear rumours they are trying to bring back Doctor Who but nobody has called me."

McGann, 40, says he's both happy and sad the series was never taken up. "There was £5m behind the project, and if the pilot has been taken up, I would have had to sign a six-year contract," he says.

"It would have meant relocating the family to North America where it was to be filmed - but that would have been offset by the millions of dollars I would have made."

Playing Doctor Who was a lot of fun he says, because of the obsessive nature of the show's fans.

"The fans are remarkable. If I had been the bad character in a soap it would have been difficult, but playing Doctor Who was a laugh."

That's it.
