Once again the spy with good taste, Junior Mintz, is at it again. From Samurai genre films to Horror to.... a movie with a tone between "DESTROY ALL MONSTERS and a long SCTV movie Parody!" Well friggin sign me up, I'm dying to see this. Though, I think I probably will. If memory serves this is a film that Tarantino's ROLLING THUNDER label has picked up for distribution. From the sounds of it... we're in for a treat...
"KILL PEKING MAN!"
Somewhere in tone between DESTROY ALL MONSTERS and a long SCTV movie parody comes MIGHTY PEKING MAN, an obscure, and to this dyed in the wool monsterphile completely unknown offering of highly amusing Hong Kong schlock.
Filmed in 1977 and intended to cash in on the heels of Dino De Laurentiis' 1976 KING KONG remake, PEKING tells the thrilling tale of a broken-hearted explorer who undertakes an expedition to Nepal to bring back a gigantic apelike creature, the aforementioned Peking Man. In due course the explorer finds the ape, known as Utang to his friends, the most important of which is a buxom blonde jungle goddess named Samantha. Honest.
Face it big monkey fans, this one's got it all. Earthquakes, quicksand, elephant attacks, tiger attacks, cobra attacks, indescribable disco numbers, Peking Man goes berserk and righteously stomps natives and city folks alike. Samantha (played to campy perfection by Evelyne Kraft) romps with a pet leopard whose jaws have been too obviously wired shut to prevent it from killing everyone in the crew. And best of all, such stellar dialogue as as: "Kill Peking Man! Use whatever force is necessary! Do you understand me? You must kill that Peking Man!"
Brilliant in every sense of the word.
J.M.
