These two fellas made some great movies together... and apart, but here's a documentary about their headstrong battles of egos and wills. For folks like me, that devour everything on Hitchcock... well it's something to look forward to. I hope it's good. My favorite of the Selznick/Hitchcock films is SPELLBOUND... notice who got top billing... albeit in smaller font...

I caught the documentary "Selznick, Hitchcock & the End of Hollywood," a fun documentary. The documentary itself wasn't so original (much of the info is common film trivia knowledge if you're as big a Hitchcock fan as me), but the film was fun for one reason: I was in a room with a bunch of people who all loved film history! Basically, it illustrated the 7-year relationship between the producer of "Gone With the Wind" and one of history's greatest directors when Hitch first came over to the states. Their collaboration (or, more accurately, their constant butting heads for control) led to film greats as "Rebecca" and my favorite, "Notorious". Selznick was at the top of his game, but eventually because a shell of the man he once was through a lot of bad choices (anyone see "Duel in the Sun"?). Hitchcock, staying true to his moral center (despite his fetish for blond women :-) ), rises from this period to learn the Hollywood system and eventually to become one of the best directors of all time. The film is fairly standard documentray fare, though there was one big laugh when it became clear that Raymond Burr's villian in "Rear Window" is a dead ringer for an aging Selznick. It's obvious what years of micromanagement by Selznick did for Hitch's opinion. Anyway, if you like Hitchcock or film history, it's something to check out when you have the chance. TARRANT
