A Look at THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE starring Theron and Depp

I've seen an early print of this film, along with the viewer below, and I disagree with his assessment of the film. I didn't like it, but then it's not the final print of the movie, it doesn't have the final score, and ZERO effects were done. So there's still a lot of work to do before this movie is done. There are a lot of spoilers below, so if you don't want to know how it goes, don't read, though he did like the film. I'll write up my feelings on the film when I have the time to write them... THe movie is due out in the Fall, so that's a lot of tinkering time for this film. It will at least need an AMAZING score to work at some level, I'd go with Jerry Goldsmith for the material here, he could breathe a bit of life into this one.

Desslock here. Well I was able to see what looks to be the final edit of The Astronauts Wife last night. I say looks to be because the running time was about 100min but the FX sequences weren't finished during the film's climax. I went in to the film having zero info other than it stared Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron so I didn't know what to expect. I actually thought it was going to be some kind of love story or a tragedy in space aftermath film. Wrong. The basic plot of the film is that Depp is an astronaut that goes up on a routine shuttle flight to launch a satellite and something happens. When he returns he resigns the program and takes a job with an aerospace firm in New York. Sounds pretty generic. However there are things different. The above info is all from the very beginning of the film and isn't to much of a spoiler, not more than the trailer will have anyway. Majors below.

OK here's the whole deal. While in Space NASA looses contact with Depp and his partner while they are working on the satellite for 2min due to an explosion. Due to the accident the shuttle is recalled and the Astronauts are put through tests. They both seem to check out fine. Then Depp tells his wife he is leaving NASA for the job in NY and a going away party is thrown. During the party the second Astronaut has a massive stroke and dies while he is making his way hurriedly through the crowd, the whole time calling for Depp's character. Then at the wake after the funeral his wife tells Charlize that he her husband had heard voices coming form the radio and that he could almost understand them. Charlize doesn't understand what she means. Minutes later the electricity flashes through the house and we learn that the wife has decided to commit suicide by taking a shower with the above said radio.

Now we move on to NY and Theron begins to notice odd things about Depp. Not a lot but little things. Soon she is confronted by a person whom was fired by NASA with info he thinks she must see. The film starts to really pick up there and I won't ruin the last of the film but the entire climax of the film when finished will resemble the end quickening from the first Highlander. Think electricity and water.

All and all I have to say I did like the film. It could have been a little better story wise but there aren't any major plot holes and Depp is very good. I am not sure of the actual release date to theaters but I have heard September from a couple of people.
