A positive review of CARRIE 2

Is it possible that movie could... not blow chunks all over the theater? I haven't for one second assumed it would be anything other than ass... but perhaps it's fun ass. I guess we'll have to hang out and wait for more word on the film. Though I just have to believe that any comparisons between this as a sequel and EVIL DEAD 2 as a sequel must be the work of an insane person. Surely? Right? Well, I don't know that's for sure, I haven't seen it.

Yo, Harry!

I went to a preview screening of "The Rage: Carrie 2" last night, and was immediately struck by how much the audience looked like the one attending the showing of "Scream" I attended. And "Scream 2", "I Know What You Did Last Summer", and "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer". >From where I was sitting, I could see no one who looked over 21. I was so ready to hate this movie. Really. I knew, of course, that there was no way it could be better than the original, and I was right about that. But in a way, that doesn't really matter with a movie like this. Carrie 2 is to Carrie what Evil Dead 2 is to Evil Dead. The second is funnier, and (this could be debated) gorier. But (to me, anyway) the original will always be king. But that's not devaluing the sequel. Also, as is the case in ED2, Carrie 2 feels a lot like a remake. The plot's pretty much the same; outcast girl suffers terrible trauma, popular guy falls in love with her, popular guy's friends get pissed and decide to take the outcast down, they spring a nasty little surprise on her, and she blows the shit outta them. The first half of the movie is decent, meaning no really bad acting, and one really shocking scene in the beginning (comparable, I suppose, to the shower sequence in Carrie). But when Rachel (the main character) reaches the party near the end, it all comes down, and that's why the movie's worth seeing. In the version I saw, one or two effects still needed some work, but it was still pretty damn cool. I'm not going to describe what happens, but let's just say it's about as close as you're going to come to some decent gore in the theaters these days. I haven't seen any of the actors and actresses in anything before except for the kid from Home Improvement (he plays a pretty good drunken misogynist asshole). Of course, the writer never strays far from the standard cliches of evil jocks vs. misunderstood outcasts, but hey, you gotta have villains, right? One last thing I admired about Carrie 2 is that it doesn't cop out and give you a nice happy ending, which they easily could have done. It's not perfect, but it's fun, and I think that's enough.
