A look at EDtv and BOWFINGER'S BIG THING

Well we've had very positive reviews on each of these films in the past, as well as a couple of 'uneven' reviews, so just add these to the pile. These are advanced looks and should not be taken as anything other than 'a friend of mine heard it wasn't very good', which means... you don't know where the info comes from, we're not familiar with what movies this guy likes or dislikes. So... here ya go...

This is G-Love giving you two reviews of forthcoming movies that I happened to catch a couple of weeks back. They are my first reviews, so . . (no spoilers). The first was edTV, starring Matthew McConaughey and the Elfman girl from Dharma, along with Ellen Degeneres, Rob Reiner, Woody Harrelson, Martin Landeau, Elizabeth Hurley and in a cameo Dennis Hopper. I went in with zero expectations, and left the theater thinking that parts of the movie showed real promise, although the whole was less than amazing. The inevitable comparisons to Truman are not really worthy. Ed is an exploration of REAL life being altered by the television medium, Truman was in an alternate existence. He lived in a world that he didn't know was governed by the director. Anyway, the movie is silly. McConaughey is not as obnoxious as usual, and is decent. Ellen, whom I cannot stand is bearable. Woody is funny but disappears about halfway through. The rest of the cast is ok, but the movie really disappoints because it could have been very interesting. The result is a movie that does not decide if it is a comedy, a drama or a romantic mix. There are some funny scenes, yet I feel that if the editing doesn't come up with some cuts, and the flow not sharpened, it is really going to be a loser.

The next flick is the should have been hilarious Bowfinger's Big Thing. This movie has Steve Martin, who also wrote this crap, and Eddie Murphy. Although both have made some atrocious films, I was really rooting for this one to be roll in the aisles, tears streaming, stomach achingly funny. Instead I would personally like to warn the general public against watching the horrible, big-budgeted mess that it is. The cast is Heather Graham and some others that I do not know. They are bad in every sense of the word. They do not even play the campy scenes well. The plot is a mess. There really was room here for a biting Hollywood satire. Instead from the first scene the movie relies on visual stupidity. Many in the theater laughed, while I cringed. I actually wanted to go up to the screening people to plead with them not to release this embarrassment. Hollywood has really gone haywire if a movie with Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy can be so bad. A small note on the recent release of Stepmom. This is another real piece of work. So syrupy sweet and annoying. Please avoid at all costs. Susan Sarandon is highly overrated in this cryfest. Julia Roberts is ok, and the redeemer Ed Harris is in too small of a role. Keep up the good work man. Later. This has been G-Love bringing you the Special Sauce.
