The Coen Brothers to do TO THE WHITE SEA' UPDATED AT: 12-07-98 1:36am

ADDITIONAL INFO JUST IN....

This just hit me via one of my trusted agents in the field in L.A. ---- "The script the Coens are doing and the script the Peoples wrote are one and the same. I assume the Coens will do some sort of rewrite, but this is a brilliant, excellent script."

On to the regular report

I have heard rumours about this highly visual script, that has ZERO dialogue and relies completely on body language, the environment and the happenings around him. Now just in case you think this is... unheard of, there is an amazingly good film noir called THE THIEF (1952) that starred Ray Milland as a kind of OPERATION CONDOR type a film, but much better IMHO... There is not one shred of dialogue, but it holds your attention by it's sheer story-telling ability. This doesn't mean an absence of sound, merely dialogue. And there is no cheating with narration either. Go check out CITY LIGHTS or MODERN TIMES if you think it can't be a good movie. Now listen, I'll beat ya about the head and shoulders if you don't think the COEN Brothers can deliver this flick. After the BRILLIANT "BIG LEBOWSKI" (no I'm not being funny, I'm dead serious, It's in my upper part of my top 10 thus far this year). Let's hear as much as you folks can gather on this one, and... the script would make an excellent Birthday Present....

Thought I'd point you this way, although you probably know more about the Coens than this article does... There's an interview with Ethan at http://avclub.theonion.com

As for their next project... If they can get the studio's to make it... It's Called "To The White Sea," based on James Dickey's last novel (author of Deliverance). This is their first adaptation of a novel, and the most interesting part is that it's a silent movie.

This is what Ethan says about the plot... " It's in effect a silent movie about a tailgunner in a B-29 who gets shot down over Japan, so for the balanceof the movie he's in Japan trying to make his way from the main island to Hokkaido, the north island--and, for obvious reasons, not talking to anyone."
