EXCERPT FROM THE PUPPET MASTER

Bill Payne interviews special effects guru Richard Taylor.

Q:Is it important for you to like the people you are working with, or is it enough to just admire their talent? How do you get along with Peter Jackson, for example?

A:Peter and I are very good friends, and I hold the highest amount of respect for him. Hes like tania and I in that hes forged his own industry from the grass roots with very little help. Hes totally focused, totally passionate and very generous. But the major thing about Peter is that hes a highly intelligent man. Obviously, he enjoys the splatter movie genre, or he wouldnt have made Braindead, but I believe he made it because it was a clever concept at the time.

Q:It occurred to me the other day that Tolkiens book Lord of The Rings was, in a way, the original road-movie.

A:[Laughs] At the end of the day, its about a group of people placed in peril to overcome and conquer evil. Invariably, the most successful films are about the innocent, the young and the vulnerable, conquering over the powerful and the evil-often losing their life but through the process evolving the greater good. Star Wars is a fantasic example of that.If you shed all the science fiction aspects of it, it comes down to a young man triumphing over evil. But the most striking thing about Tolkiens work is the history, the depth of understanding for his characters, the background knowledge. His work will live on beyond anyone elses because he created a totally encompassing universe where you believe the characters exist. You know these characters have a history, and thats the strongest aspect.

Q:There seems to be a good chance you'll be working on Lord of The rings. isnt the biggest challenge you'll face humanising your characters so that the audience find them sympathetic? The reason the book works so well is that we come to know the hearts and souls of the characters - they appear almost human. Do you think you'll have a problem with that?

A:I have to be cautious here but thats an incredibly pertinent point.A lot of film creatures are made to look fantasical, but it is imperitive that that for the [Lord Of The Rings] concept to work- whether we or someone else ends up doing it- the audience must believe in the world that is created. Youre not going to a back lot of a film studio thats been put together by a 1990s art department. You've got to honestly believe that you've got on a plane, landed at the middle earth airport and stepped into a historic environment. it must have an edge of realism. It can't be too fantastical, it must be gritty-there is dirt uinderneath their toenails, spinach between their teeth.

Personal Hobbits

PETER JACKSON says of filming JRR Tolkien's classic trilogy, "It can only be my personal interpretation of The Lord of the Rings." A ring of power is entrusted to a small furry "hobbit" to save Middle earth from the forces of evil, in a tale of kings and wizards, elves and dwarves, goblins and other demons. Tolkiens "epic fantasy" has captured the imagination of children and adults world wide. How is Jacson going to turn the books into film without losing their magic? "I cannot possibly attempt to second guess how millions of readers perceive the world of middle earth," replies Jackson." I am a Lord of the Rings reader who has been lucky enough to to get the opportunity to make the movies and in all respects these movies will be personal to me."

The main characters are hobbits Frodo and sam, Gandalf the wizard and Aragorn, his partner against dark forces Sauron and Saruman. Critics of The Lord of the Rings note the low profile of women. "We are working on ways to enhance the roles that Arwen(elven princess) and Eowyn(warrior princess) play in the story," says Jackson, "however, we will not be adding any new female characters." On the master/servant relationship between Frodo and Sam, Jackson says"We don't have an interest in being too politically correct or revisionist with any aspect of Lord of the Rings." Jackson on film locations: "I'm sure new zealanders will recognise the landscape as distinctly New Zealand."

Real forests combined with computer-generated trees will create the magical forests of Tolkiens world. The search for suitable forests is still on. Filming will take 13 months. The three movies will be shown five- six months apart. Total viewing time will exceed six hours.
