Test Screening Review of CARRIE II

Well gosh what did we expect? Now remember, this is just one person's opinion on an early print of the film, so... let's see what other's think. Me I'm of the mind that CARRIE ended with a hand grabbing a cuff of a pant leg. I don't need to know more. But hey... I know some of you are looking forward to this. My question is... IS THERE ANY FANTASTIC DUOVISION LIKE IN THE ORIGINAL? Inquiring imbeciles like me wanna know!

I don't know if this is usful, but I saw the first test screening of the sequel to Carrie a few weeks ago. It was in a rough state, so the digital looked like it was don on a mac classic, but that wasn't really the problem. The problem was the entire implementation of the "Carrie" concept. "Carrie" is all about action really happening only at the end. Otherwise everyone else knows that the "carrie" character is tele/pyrokinetic. So if you want to make a Carrie nmovie you basically have 1 1/2 hours of film to make before you can really cut to the horror, and in that time you'd better make us invest in the characters so that when the blood starts to flow at the end, it matters. None of this was done with "Carrie II," and the crowd I saw it with hated it. Instead of a solid drama up until slaughter-time, the movie was essentially a "Scream/I know what you did last sumer" clone, with all kinds of contrived high-school clique stuff, except instead of somebody getting killed every now and then, Carrie's half-sister Rachel, the heroine, would kind of trip out and move a cup around or break a snow-shakey thing, making Amy Irving look upset. That's the whole problem with this movie: it has the evil jocks, the suicidal goth chicks, the one good football player that Rachel falls in love with, etc., but it's all been so done before it doesn't mean anything. We know we're just being forced to watch the results of a lot of test-market-second-guessing, without a scrap of chance or originality put into the film. Also the inappropriate "cut to pet dachsund" shots during major horror sequences deflate what little suspense there is. I think the movie's in for a lot of recutting before it gets released. Amyt Irving, particularly, goes out in a really ridiculous way, and some of the editing is so bad that you can't tell whose getting killed. Anyway, this is a really third-rate teen-horror rehash that looks like its going to miss the last end of that wave of box office gold. Serves them right.
