This came from Mr. No-Clever-Nickname, who was feeling ummm... dim and obvious? Hmmmm. Anyway, he attended the Virginia Film Festival too and had the following to say about HOME FRIES and ONE NIGHT STAND:
I too was at the VA film festival. I wanted to lend my views on Home Fries. I thought it was a nice, cute, little movie - but unless they really market it well, I don't expect it to make much of a splash. The stand-out in this flick was Luke Wilson, who plays the same kind of likeable neurotic he played in Bottle Rocket. Actually this movie has a similar feel to Bottle Rocket. (please note that the movies have almost nothing in common, just a similar middle-america feel). In the program it was called a "work in progress" but from what I saw it was almost ready to be released, it just needed polishing in a few spots. A nice touch was the Q&A session they held afterwards with the producer Mark Johnson and the writer Vince Gilligan.
Also premiering at the festival was Mike Figgis' new flick, One Night Stand, staring Wesley Snipes. This one I wasn't to impressed by, but then again I didn't like leaving Las Vegas. This is a story about infidelity. They did some Jerry Maguiresque voice overs that I didn't really think fit in. Oh well, I don't have too much to say about this one. It was kind of wierd watching the movie and then the next day going to see Boogie Nights and watching a trailer for One Night Stand and having it say "coming soon".
Overall these new films were overshadowed in my mind but a lot of the old classics I saw. They showed some really great classic films at this festival. I was really impressed by Woman in the Dunes in particular.
