Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Apparently our favorite quirky comedy director has a fan in Captain Jack since Johnny Depp has picked Terry Zwigoff (GHOST WORLD, BAD SANTA, ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL) to co-write and direct an adaptation of a French novel called HAPPY DAYS. Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, has the rights. No word on whether Depp will want to act in it as well as produce.
Like the headline says, this film has nothing to do with Ron Howard or Henry Winkler. There will be no shark jumping (that I'm aware of). The story centers on a dude in his 30s who leaves his wife and child and checks himself into a rest home where he befriends an old woman. Zwigoff says Depp wanted him for this project because he felt the director shared many of the same qualities as someone like Hal Ashby. The story does have a vague HAROLD AND MAUDE feel.
Any new Terry Zwigoff movie is to be celebrated. This one sounds like a great fit! What do you folks think?
