I am – Hercules!!
“Beyond The Break” is a new series about the screwed-up lives of four gorgeous, horny half-naked teen surf-rats!! I got hold of a bunch of episodes and I’m here to tell you I couldn’t stop feeding them into my DVD player! I was up well past midnight last night with the half-naked surf rats!
In the interest of full disclosure, I’m obliged to point out that I’m great pals with the fabulous Sarah Watson, who’s one of “Beyond the Break’s” big-deal writer-producers and a chickie who’s going places. She explains that the reason all the hot teen girls are half-naked at all times has to do with the fact that the show’s set in toasty Hawaii, and the surfers there - unlike their counterparts in chillier Los Angeles - don’t bother with cumbersome wetsuits.
And, boy, does this series never stop proving it was shot in Oahu! That’s a fake ocean behind Ryan Atwood’s poolhouse on “The O.C.,” but you look out a window on “Beyond The Break’s” set and you’re looking at a real high-tide. The locations are gorgeous and so is the cinematography.
I’m obliged to point out also that while all the hot 17-year-old surfer girls are played by tiny adults well over the age of 21, it’s still dirty and wrong and unlawful for you to notice how insanely attractive they all are.
Have a gander at the clothing-impaired faux-jailbait cast here.
Ain’t It Cool’s crack Pacific Islands editor attended a special beach-screening and caught up with several “Beyond The Break” players:
Aloha, Moon Yun signing in from Hawaii where I attended the world premiere screening of a new TV series “BEYOND THE BREAK” on Waikiki Beach.
Hundreds and hundreds of people showed up for The N channel’s new, original surf series which was shot entirely in Hawaii. I really enjoyed the show and the audience reaction was tremendous. You don’t have to be a teen to watch this series. It’s got teenagers in crisis, young starlets in bikinis, hot surfers tearing up the waves, and because it’s on a family type channel, the story is pretty tame but engaging.
Check it out for yourself when the 20-episode BEYOND THE BREAK premieres with an hour-long special on The N on Friday, June 2 at 8:30 pm (ET). The show is normally a half-hour long. The N can be found on systems such as DirecTV, DISH Network, Adelphia Digital Cable, AT&T Broadband, Cablevision IO, Charter Digital Cable, Comcast Digital Cable and Time Warner Digital Cable. The producer told me the show will be broadcast simultaneously on the-n.com.
For those of you who don’t know what The N is, neither did I until I went to this screening; it’s a nighttime network for teens that helps them figure out their lives through relevant programming. It’s also a programming arm of MTV network.
Another reason you have to check this out is because the series has the music of Hawaii ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. He had a cold that night so he wasn’t his usual dynamic self. But I’ll never forget the awesome performance he gave on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” Recently he has been touring with Jimmy Buffett. For more information on Shimabukuro and his tour schedule, please visit www.jakeshimabukuro.com.
By now you’ve already guessed that BEYOND THE BREAK is about making it in the world of professional surfing. Four passionate women with diverse background pursue this dream and their coach, a former surf legend, makes sure they get there.
OK, so the story may not be so original but the cast is adorable. They include David Chokachi who plays Justin Healy, the former surf legend and Pipeline Masters Champ. He's been given a second chance to right his wrong as a coach for WaveSync. The first episodes didn’t reveal what he did wrong so I’m curious to find out about it in the next episodes.
Here I got to interview some of the charismatic cast members:
Lacey Farmer (Natalie Ramsey): "It was a bit (of a challenging role). You had to do the whole acting thing and on top of that you had to go out to the waves - your make-up would be dripping off. It was definitely hard but how can you complain? You’re on a beach in Hawaii. The best thing (about the show) - it looks great - everything. It’s got athletics in it. It’s got drama in it. Hopefully it’ll leave you waiting to see the next episode!"
Birdie Scott (Tiffany Hines): "It is unbelievable for me just because this was the very first audition that I had in L.A. when I moved from Ohio - I drove out against all of my friends (and) parents’ wishes and came out to LA. (After just four months), it was my very first audition after I signed with my agent. It was just like the start of an incredible year for me - Just recently I did GREY’S ANATOMY. It’s been a little over a year now that I’ve been working and it’s just been incredible."
Ross Thomas (Bailey): [After teasing him as being a “Playboy Surfer.”] "I feel like there’s a Playboy in every type of profession. Bailey is one of the world’s best pro surfers but he spends a little too much time out of the water partying and flirting with women instead of in the water defending his surfing title where he should be. People at the beginning of season might see him as one way but slowly throughout the season the character unfolds and reveals a very multi-layered character that actually has some major insecurity about life, surfing and girls. It’s one of those characters that are going to be fun to watch because it develops throughout the season."
That’s it for now, Moon Yun signing out!
