OK, indie lovers here's a look at Gallo's BUFFALO 66, a must see art piece which may or may not appear at a cinema near you. At any rate you should make an strong effort to find and see this excellant film...
The reason I'm writing is I noticed there's no Buffalo 66 review on your site. I guess it hasn't opened in Austin yet.
I had the chance to see it last week in Vancouver and it is without a doubt for me THE DEFINING FILM MOMENT OF THE YEAR (I probably won't see POE, disney-style animation gives me a rash).
See BUFFALO 66 as soon as you possibly can, not since GODARD'S prime has a film awed me so from the first frame to the last. Some people will think the film is painful to watch (like Mike Leigh) but the strenuous nature of most of the characters is underlined by a strain of black humour and it's touching too. Visually the film (shot on reversal stock as you probably know) which Gallo wanted to look like a faded print of Pierrot Le Fou is the best looking most sensuously textured movie since Wong Kar Wai's HAPPY TOGETHER.
Gallo is on fire in this film cutting his way through every scene like a viscous wounded dog who might bite you at any second. Ricci is mesmerising as in Gallo's own words "the perfect girl". Angelica Huston and Ben Gazzara are flawless as Billy Brown's parents. Billy Browns red boots are like a character unto themselves.
Maybe a mention or a review on your site will draw attention to this masterpiece which apparently isn't exactly packing them in.
Movies like POE get enough attention already. Give some props to the unsung geniuses working in the dank, but dream filled, corners of Art Film. Movies like HAPPY TOGETHER, BUFFALO 66, GUMMO and IRMA VEP would have been hailed as defining films of an era in a perfect world, but in this cultural climate are all but dismissed or ignored. A lot of critics actually seem annoyed by films that dare to be daring especially if they are home grown(see David Lynch, Vince Gallo, Harmony Korine in America. Wong Kar Wai mocked and parodied in Hong Kong not just by the critics but by some of his fellow filmakers as well).
Well I'm done venting. For now.
