I had heard this as a rumor a looooong time ago, but didn't believe it. Why? Because well... I didn't believe it. Far and away it has seemed that THE CAT AND THE HAT was the most popular Dr Seuss property and well... Eric Roth seemed to be going in circles trying to translate it into a feature length script with Mr Tool Time allegedly up for the lead. But so far... nothing has come of that. Soooooo, when I heard this rumor about 4 weeks ago... "Bah, no way!" I exclaimed. First off, is there any possible way to get a better voice or series of expressions than the animated version with Boris Karloff's voice. I seriously doubt it. Would the cost, the massive amounts of money that it would cost to bring the world Theodore Geisel imagined and drew... well would that be a wise investment? Is there a desire for it? I don't know. Though I think this will be the day's poll. Talk about this one folks, what do you think about this being a live action property?
I'm writing to express my absolute horror at the news I've just read concerning Universal's decision to film a live-action "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" feature. They're looking for Jim Carrey to star and Ron Howard to direct. Of course, the age-old, rhetorical question of "Why the hell can't Hollywood do something original?" comes to mind but I'm more upset because this is my all-time favorite Christmas program. I don't want to see it soiled with live-action special-effects and a real dog to portray Max. Why can't they leave well enough alone? I got this upset when I read about the potential Willy Wonka re-make, another of my all-time favorites. But this Grinch project looks like it's really going to happen. What can I do to stop it?!?!?!?
