Well here's another report from TORONTO, this time covering the Tom Cruise produced WITHOUT LIMITS. People seem to like this flick, so it may be worth checking out. Here's the look...
It's Calvin again with another report from the great old north, TORONTO!!! I went to the gala screen opening of "Without Limits" at the Toronto International Film Festival, the new Tom Cruise produced film about Steve Prefontaine. The film is starring Billy Crudup (in the Prefontaine role) and Donald Sutherland as his coach/mentor. The film is written by frequent Cruise colaborator Robert Towne.
Some of you may remember the film "Prefontaine" that was released earlier this year. The film didn't do to well and didn't really do Prefontaine justice. Whereas "Prefontaine" was baisically for entertainment, "Without Limits" was more of a docu drama. It really focused on emotion and was more true to life than "Prefontaine". The film perfectly cast Donald Sutherland as Steve's coach (The role was first offered to Tommy Lee Jones who declined due to financial reasons).
Crudup does an excelent job of portraying the U.S. track star. He conveys great emotion. You just know that he is in love with his sport and the attention he is getting. He portrays Prefontaine as a man who is obsessed with winning and will do anything to reach "the limits". In the end it was a very interesting movie, with some solid acting and great writing.
