Hey folks, Harry here... Late last year right before BNAT 6, I flew off to a quick little adventure to Berlin, Germany. Once there I was on set for one day - and it was a strange set to visit. This wasn't a tiny film - but the day I was there for had a claustrophobic femme on femme fight scene that wasn't the sort of grand motion type of action that I was thinking of with AEON FLUX. The fight was intimate, brutal and absolutely electrifyingly erotic. I'll describe it to you on another day, but for now - let me explain why I haven't written about my experiences there.
Usually when you visit a set - you can see exactly what the film wants to be. For me, on AEON FLUX... I just couldn't tell. I went through every single still they shot for the production. 1000s of them... and looking at them, sure everything 'looked' very nice, but... AEON FLUX isn't stills. It's about motion, music, dynamism and if it slows down, it slows down for a John Hancock holy shit signature moment. Yet, what I was watching was... still. I spoke for hours with Gale Anne Hurd & Matt Manfredi (the screenwriter) and they both sounded like they knew exactly what they were doing. They described to me a film with all the prerequisite subversive qualities that made AEON FLUX such a cool treat. Drugs containing information that would open up you mind into higher planes of existence where you could meet with other fellow rebels (terrorists) to plan your strikes in complete secrecy. Aeon was still set to be an assassin - but how did she move? What did her world look like beyond the stunning buildings and stunningly cool angles of BERLIN? I just couldn't tell from stills. I mean - if someone tells you there is a scene with threatening blades of grass that sense you... ya kinda have to see what it looks like before you say, "Cool."
Well - finally seeing the trailer - I can honestly say that this 'looks' cool now. Ultimately - I haven't read the script - so I can't say I know that the wonderfully subversive stuff they told me about was being handled smartly - BUT - everyone I met on-set seemed to be quite smart on how they said they were handling it.
I know some of you saw the trailer on MTV's debut of it, but that site is shit for the world of Mac users - but now the trailer is in glorious Quicktime for all of us! Check it out - looks pretty sweet. Soon I'll tell you about the experience of getting some alone time with Charlize... and the ghosts of Fritz Lang, Metropolis, Dietrich, etc.
