This is awesome news. GOD OF WAR is one of the few games I’ve actually finished in recent memory, and it wasn’t because it was easy (it wasn’t, actually, especially in those final maddening Hell levels), but because the narrative was so compelling. I had to finish. It was simply a case of wanting to know how the whole thing ended, and knowing that I’d do whatever the game demanded in order to see how all the pieces came together. I hope the film plays like the biggest fucked up steroid-dream version of what a Harryhausen film could be. VARIETY broke the story, and what few details there are so far follow:
Universal Pictures has secured the movie rights to video game God of War, created by Sony Computer Entertainment. Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven and Alex Gartner will produce the feature adaptation.
In the game, players can unleash the power of the Gods and embark on a merciless quest as Kratos, an ex-Spartan warrior driven to destroy Ares, the God of War. Armed with lethal double chainblades, Kratos must carve through mythology’s darkest creatures— including Medusa, Cyclops, the Hydra and more, while solving intricate puzzles in breathtaking environments. Driven by pure revenge, nothing can stop Kratos from achieving absolution.
The game, created by David Jaffe and Shannon Studstill, was released in March. A writer or director has not yet been attached to the project.
