A Cool Letter from a Slave Of Hollywood

Father Geek here with a note from the underbelly of the indie film world. I first saw SLAVES OF HOLLYWOOD back in early March, and like many small films on the festival circut it is full of irreverant humour, in this case a sent-up of the Hollywood system that sucks the creative juices dry from it's neverending supply of fresh young film makers only to discard their lifeless corpses like the vampire that it is when it has gotten all that it needs from them. If you get a chance go see this small, underfinanced effort, I think you'll enjoy it. (NOTE: To the directors, send your Wacky Pacs to our PO Box ASAP! We need them badly!)

You met my partner, Terry Keefe, at South by Southwest a few months ago and he gave you our film's prop-handout, the infamous "Slaves of Hollywood" switchblade comb. I hope you've gotten good use out of it.

The reason I'm contacting you is because I just read that wonderful entry from the filmmaker from Southwest Texas and your prologue to it where you expressed your desire to hear more about the "Small" indies. Well, I'm not sure if you've had a chance to catch a screening of our "Slaves" but I thought I'd make another appeal as a filmmaker who's made a low-budget film and could use every bit of support possible. This is a very low time for indie filmmakers. Not the already famous, established ones. The unestablished, disenfranchised, bankrupt, soon to become unabomber indies. As we've discovered through the last year, the big festivals are about helping the already successful indie, not the struggling "aesthete." Although I feel that "Slaves" is finally climbing out of that muck and getting some attention, our film could really benefit by having your site give us a good word. (Ofcourse, you have to see it and really like it, first)

And I think the film would appeal to you. As an avid reader of your website who has read most of your reviews, something inside tells me you'll get a kick out of the movie and it's absurdist view of the Hollywood hellhole.

Here's what's been happening: "Slaves" is finally getting out there as its been invited to over 15 festivals and has most recently won an award at the Rhode Island Festival sponsored by the Farrelly Bros. On an even better note, one of our actors, Hill Harper, has just starred in "He Got Game" and will be in a movie playing opposite Felicia Ryshad. We've managed to get certain members of the press to write about us and get behind the 5 year odyssey that this has been. And more mentions are coming up in Moviemaker next month.

We're having our very first industry screenings in early November, and it would be great if we could get a mention on your website to help get a buzz going.

Thanks for reading this entire email. Sorry about its length. I'm unemployed, too much time on my hands.

Sincerely,

Michael Wechsler
