Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
Johnnie To will never have the same sort of respect that’s heaped on guys like Chan-Wook Park or Ki-duk Kim or Takashi Miike. He’s not that guy. Sure, right now he's getting raves for his new film at the Cannes Festival, but that's this year. He makes a ton of films every year, and some of his films are really good, and others are just so-so, and he’s made more than a few that are sort of incomprehensible. One thing’s for sure, though... he seems to really love what he does. Even in a film as batshit crazy as RUNNING ON KARMA, there’s a dedication and a conviction that I really admire.
All credit for this mini-festival’s programming goes to the fine folks at The American Cinematheque. They just asked me if I wanted to co-present this event, and I’m delighted to be able to be part of it. I’ll definitely be attending the films, and I hope to see many of you there as well.
